Local blogger and political activist Amelia Peloquin today pulled papers to run for Southbridge Town Council. She is also a member of the Democratic Town Committee

  2. Well good for her the only problem that I can see is her lack of following through. Just look at her greater southbridge project website started off with great fanfare but look at now. She has used the excuse of being sick and having sick children being a parent I fully understand. We do need change but we need people willing to give 100%. Maybe she can do that but I don't think she can. I also don't think that she can be open minded on issue and would be swayed by that very small group of small minded one issue people with one of its leader being Mr Sottile. But regardless good luck

...I'm not interested in running this year. I gave it a lot of serious thought in the last few months, but it's a huge commitment to do the job well and my husband and I agree that it just doesn't make sense for my family right now.

I *am* very interested in doing campaign work. Dennis was right on with his advice to organize, fundraise, and take it to the streets. Building a successful grassroots campaign is an incredibly huge amount of work, but it's work I enjoy and I'm hoping I can be useful in some way this political season.

Many thanks to Anon 05:18 PM, Cozzens, Bob and Rich: I very well may take you up on the suggestion at some point in the future.

  4. You know what people, At least she is trying to make a difference in town versus alot of people running scared and babying to their MS Clemence or MS Nikola- then running to their neigbors and bitching about the town. Good For Amelia!

  5. Yes, good for her. She'll make the race hysterical with her lack of intelligence.

  6. good for her.....and good for us! we need change....and change isn't going to happen without new folks running. i'm confused, everyone complains about how things are, but then everyone jumps on here and personally attacks Amelia for making an effort, that's just flat wrong. give her a chance, leave her personal life alone and if you like her vote for her, if you don't then vote for what we have now.

  7. The people want someone to run that has a chance , isn't a flake, and isn't about self promotion. Brilliance? Please! The word is opportunist. Nothing brilliant about her, besides her ability to convince you that she cares about anyone other than herself. She'll be lucky if she doesn't finish after last. Who next? Sottile or Marketti ? Send in the clowns. Don't bother, they're already here .

Welcome to America! Land of Opportunity! Hence; we can be all classified as Opportunists.

    2. Gee, sorry I missed you when I arrived at Ellis Island. No kidding it's land of "opportunity", not opportunists. Not the same thing. She's going to be beaten so badly that she'll make the last person that got beaten so badly look like a winner. Welcome to the land of getting defeated, and helping the incumbents win. Great job!

Let’s be Clear.....Do you mean kind-of-like the Majority Town Council? Then that would certainly place her, Amelia, in the Winner’s Circle!

  8. Yes, the anonymous lurkers are quick to criticize anyone who doesn't march in lock step with the town manager. Who could these people be? The usual reason given for an anonymous post is that the writer is afraid of retribution by the powers that be. But, if you support our esteemed town manager, what are you afraid of? He's already demonstrated he's willing and able to take care of his friends.

Good for Amelia. She's a fresh voice in local politics and has the tenacity needed to be a successful councilor. I wish her well.

  9. if Amelia is all about "self promotion" then why was she one of the first people to roll up their sleeves and come help us all out after the tornado? she did a great job at the donation warehouse, she was involved in a bake sale to help raise money for relief efforts and was regularly canvassing our neighborhood delivering goods and support........did you help out "good grief"? i haven't seen her post any of that stuff on her website.....if she was so "self promoting" it would have been right? give people a chance, non of us are perfect.

    1. Because she is all about self-promotion. She's an opportunist, who, when she see's a photo op, or a chance to get in the paper, like Forrest Gump, she's in the picture. Wowe, she came to help. How many dozens of others did, without bragging about it? Get over your infatuation with this false prophet (profit).

  10. Rich Logan yes some of us remain anonymous lurkers because of the way we were and still treated by some of your friends and associates such as the Lazo's and Sottile's. You were one of Chairman Lazo's co-herts. While you were on council what did you accomplish, NOTHING your were chairman of Development what did that sub committee do NOTHING. Nothing has changed only the players. I don't support Queen Kathy or her group just as much as I didn't support you or your leader Chairman Lazo. But I know what to expect if I use my name. Thank you Ken for allowing us to remain anonymous, marketti cartoons are tasteless but what that groups does is hurtful thanks again Ken

    1. One thing I wanted to do, and believe I had a little success with, was make the council more open to the citizens and to make sure it played by the rules it created. I'm proud of the fact that, at least for a short time, the board of health had three members as required by the charter, not the five members desired by the town manager. I'm also proud of the fact that I made decisions based on facts and my own investigation rather than simply accepting what other councilors, the town manager or his lawyers told me. As I said before, if you think you need a law degree to understand a contract, you shouldn't be on the council.

I couldn't agree more that I was ineffective on planning and development. I was never able to create the consensus between the members of the committee and town hall that's needed to make progress. I was very interested in creating a set of rules that would help us get the greatest bang for the buck from the industrial park but I wasn't able to convince enough people that this is neccessary. It was a good learning experience but what I ultimately realized is this town needs people to take a chance and start a business in town but there's very little the council can do to encourage this.

      Delete
    2. Mr Logan there was and is plenty the town could do to encourage new growth and development but because of the narrow mindedness of some councilors and the ego trips of others this town will not move forward. Your actions under the leadership of chairman Lazo showed that, with just the way you handle the Roberts Rules issue. It was done under handed and was not a way to do things and you know it. You never wanted to get the biggest bang for from the industrial park you wanted a far fetch approach like getting a company like Raytheon to build up at the park. You your self said that small companies aren't the way we go that we needed something large. Well small companies sometimes become big ones and something is better than nothing. Your time on council was wasted and full of political pay back. You expected Ms Ackly to do it all when she was and is only one person. I far as I could tell you wanted rules that were discouraging to development and made development difficult. Did you ever think to yourself why you were unable to create a consensus of the committee and town hall. Did you ever think the problem began with council and the atmosphere of hostility that council created. I bet you didn't. Council can do a lot if it wanted to. Look at what's going on at the Southbridge Airport right now (read today's snews)don't you think that this would be the ideal time for council to look at this as an opportunity to see if this location is better as a airport or maybe for industrial development. It was always a white elephant and cost the community money maybe its time to look at other things for that location.

      Delete
    3. I just want to say I have a lot of respect for Sandy Ackly and the job her office does. She brings in a significant fraction of the town budget every year in grant money she identifies and works hard to get. I believe she and her department need more support than they currently get. However, the town administration believes any growth in her office needs to come from more grants. There's no stomach and no vision to create an effective economic development office. We'll take $600k from the landfill royalty fund to pay for street sweepers and recreation directors but we wont spend a dime on economic development.

As far as creating rules, I did manage to get the town manager out of his office to look at two other industrial parks so we could understand why they were successful. We were told we needed to implement some rules to ensure we got businesses that provided good jobs with benefits rather than minimum wage jobs with no benefits. We're free to ignore those suggestions and I'm worried that we are. Without a game plan, without some idea of how much tax revenue we want to generate and how many jobs we want to provide, the industrial park will only benefit the people that own the warehouses that eventually get built there.

A few councilors understood this. The majority didn't and still don't. The town is "run" by a group of people who see themselves as advisors to the town manager rather than the directors of his actions. Many people complain that the town manager is a degreed professional and the council, as a group, isn't qualified to direct him or question his actions. I never bought into this and I think that may be why some people think I was part of a group out to get the manager.

Anyway, I agree the council can do a lot of good if it wants to. However, it needs the cooperation of the administration. If the administration doesn't buy into the council's vision, there's going to be tension and little progress. The flip side of that is if the town council views itself as little more than a support group for the town manager, progress is constrained by the manager's capability. Our current town manager has almost no economic development experience.

  11. Well that didn't take long. I for one am glad to see Amelia throw her hat into the political ring. It takes a lot of guts which is more than I can say for the losers out here who hack and sling comments anonymously. Maybe Clemence and her buddies are a little nervous and they damn well ought to be. Congrats Amelia for standing up for your town, and it is high time this particular town had the chance to develop a conscience through a elected official. A mother, an activist, and a person who is not afraid to say what is on her mind. Way to step up Amelia.

  12. Watcher, you're an idiot. What Rich did was legal, but you and your ilk didn't like that they were taken to task. All your butt buddies have done the past year has been wasted, and overspending money we can ill afford. Way to go, Cathy, and Cuz' Clemence. Two complete wastes of time.

I will go on record saying that sure, Amelia can run, but no, I won't be supporting her. She's been a Democrat, Republican, Independent, and, a special version of the Tea Party. She may be nice, but she's not qualified, and I wouldn't entrust her with MY tax dollars.

This goes to show that Rich, Bob and I can remain friends, yet, disagree on this candidate. Anyone can run, including you, Watcher (I know you from my blog days, so please, stop hiding behind the group you're a part of).

At least the three of us have the courage to say who we are.

If you don't tell us, maybe I'll let everyone know who you are instead.

And I'll say it straight out: Sandy Acly is uniquely unqualified. She couldn't organize a bathroom break, let alone a business park. She's clueless.

The business park will NEVER come to fruition. With available real estate near 84, the Pike and 20, no one is driving six miles out of the way to be on the outskirts of a dump.

    Nobody.

And Jim, would you kindly stop pontificating as if you are the all-knowing? It's getting old and tired, a one-act play in its third act.

    1. Hi, Dennis.

Of course, you are totally entitled to your own opinions, and you can support or not support my candidacy as you see fit. I will be the first person to say that my relationship with partisan politics has changed over time, starting with the Voters 4 Integrity project and ending last month when I was voted in as a member of the local DTC. Before registering as a Democrat a couple of months ago I enjoyed many years as an unenrolled swing voter with an eye for moderate Republican candidates. As you quite famously left the Republican party last year, I know you can understand my frustration with the direction the party has gone in recent years. I am not a social conservative, and as I watched the rhetoric of the GOP primary unfold this year I came to realize that there's no place for me in that organization.

Despite the fact that my party affiliation has changed, my core values and opinions on the issues haven't. I still believe in individual liberty, small government, and living within our means. I also believe corporations aren't people, civil liberties are worth fighting for, and we have a lot of work to do to achieve meaningful transparency and openness in government. My friends and I had an awful lot of fun with the Southbridge Tea Party last year, but as time goes on we've realized that it's time to get down to business and get to work if we're serious about making Southbridge a better place to live, work, and raise a family. So, here we are.

Thanks for the feedback and best wishes to you & yours.

    2. I was asked to moderate my previous comments by the blog master (BM) because of possible libel exposure. Which brings to mind the cautionary note at the bottom of the comment page? “Your comments are always welcome, but please be respectful and avoid libelous material which will result in editing or exclusion. All comments are subject to moderation.” With that in mind, and although the BM allows others to attack my creditability and character without applying the same sanctions to their submissions, I will resubmit a hopefully approved version. While harvesting signatures for the Initiative Petition a few weeks ago at the “large Rabbit” supermarket I was on my cellular telephone with other signature gatherers, (Several feet away) when I was told that Dennis “M” had entered through the front entrance of the establishment past our table in a stealthy manner. This I was informed was after several of our supporters greeted and thanked him for being the first signature on our petition. As a result I stationed myself at the front entrance to await his exit so I could confront him with his cowardly flipping and savaging attack on our civic accomplishment in this blog. We waited for almost two hours and he did not leave the supermarket. After a short investigation we realized that he had left the store via a rear exit. Amelia with such remarkable cowering goings-on coupled with the antics of a self-proclaimed academic, you can see the substance of the bipolar personality traits in your harshest critics. Do not be discouraged by their negative rants we need someone like yourself on the council if not only for your skills but for the honest spirit of service we can expect.

    3. Jim, you're a libelous dope. I had my daughter and her friend with me. I walked in the front door, said hello to Stephanie. We bought eggs, and walked out. My daughter asked why I didn't stop to say hi. I told her she had a project to do. Truth is, I wasn't going to get into an argument with you in front of two children (I mean the ones with me, not you). You proved me correct. Awesome Stealthiness Jim. It's no wonder we're not speaking Japanese or Korean with your military might. Your back was to me on your cell when I left, talking loudly as always. Now, the way I see it Jim, you can apologize publicly for your libelous statement or I can see you in court. And yes, you have my permission to petition the Bunny for the security tapes, and Amelia can put it on her site. God you're pathetic...and not much of a sentry. You call yourself a Marine? What a classless act . You want to know why I think your petition sucks? Ask me. I'm not in the least bit afraid of you, Jim. You sure think highly of yourself, don't you?

    4. The Chronicles of Mr. Sottile and his lies and attempts at deceiving the general public:

Now that I just woke up and had a chance to read with open eyes, Jim, point for point your lies and libelous statements:

"I was told that Dennis “M” had entered through the front entrance of the establishment past our table in a stealthy manner." One usually enters through the front door of an establishment. Yes, I could have scaled the wall, and climbed in through the roof, but with two twelve-year olds in tow, it was easier to use the front door. What you call a stealthy manner, 99% of people call "walking through the door". Can't really help that you can't pull yourself off your cell phone to pay attention.

"This I was informed was after several of our supporters greeted and thanked him for being the first signature on our petition. " Try ONE. Stephanie yelled out hello, to which I replied, Hi, Stephanie! No one thanked me for being the first signature on your petition. I have a life, JIm, and my daughter and her friend were more interested in doing their project than in speaking with you. Ditto for me.

"As a result I stationed myself at the front entrance to await his exit so I could confront him with his cowardly flipping and savaging attack on our civic accomplishment in this blog." Outright lie, Jim. The thee of us were in the store for four minutes, and walked out, right by you, while you were still talking loudly with your back to the door, as you were looking towards the car wash. Unless you have "stealthy eyes" in the back of your head, again you're letting the lack of facts get in the way of a good story.

"We waited for almost two hours and he did not leave the supermarket. After a short investigation we realized that he had left the store via a rear exit." Anyone who was in the military, who stationed himself at the front door for two hours at a supermarket (odd behavior in my opinion) without sending in backup to corner me between the deli and the milk section is a fool. Bigger still, Jim, here's an easy question for you and your posted guards:

How is it that I was parked in front of you, came into the store, snuck out the store after hiding in the managers office for two hours, got the manager to sneak into my car, drive it to another location, and me and my platoon hiked miles to recover the car to not be spotted:

All the while you and the others their didn't see my car with ten stickers on the back moving away. Did you want to add that I used my remote controlled wristwatch to "stealthily" move my car to another location without the benefit of a driver?

Now, a question for you, Amelia:

If this is representative of your supporters, someone who would "confront" a father at a store with two children over non-existent "savage attack" on "our petition", is this the kind of support you accept, or reject?

I have a right to know, and the voters have a right to know.

If you have any doubt as to what I've said, I'll make this challenge to you and Mr. Sottile if you refuse to condemn his lies:

Either by means of a video feed showing me going in and out of the store, or, by means of an independent lie detector test, I will put up $10,000 against Mr. Sottile to show who is telling the truth, and who is lying.

I let the truth stand with me. Or, if it's easier, ask my twelve year old daughter, who, when I relay this version to her, will first laugh, and then be scared that such outright liars have no shame.

Meanwhile, courtesy of Marketti and Sottile, I will join forces with anyone to oppose your petition, and I will continue to question your Town Council race as long as you don't condemn Jim and his outrageousness in lying to the people.

      What's it going to be?

    7. Jim, I've decided to do myself a favor, as well as the rest of the people here, and stop responding to you.

I don't hate you, but I do feel very sorry for you. Trying to twist the unbelievable into the believable is an art form you've tried before, which is why I had to always ask you to re-write what you wrote. I remember once your idea was to put out information as "heard on the street" without care as to whether or not it was accurate.

This is a great example of that, so yes, I feel sorry for you. As for the law, if that's what you want me to pursue in lieu of your admitting you made up facts that were not true, I can go that route. You intentionally made up "facts" to make your story sound plausible. I'm not a public figure, Jim.

I don't expect that you'll apologize and admit that you went over the top, so I won't hold my breathe, but I'm tired of your bullying...which you always try, and I stress, try, to twist around to someone else. By your own admission, you were trying to confront me, not the other way around.

For a guy that can dish it out, Jim, you can't take it. A good Marine would admit the truth, apologize, and move on.

By the way, I spoke briefly with Amelia via text today. We don't hate each other and we had a brief laugh over the theatrics here. What you say does impact her, whether you realize it or not.

My final words, Jim: Happy Easter.

    8. Dennis and I just had a frank and sincere telephone discussion about the comments recently made on this blog, and we mutually agreed that it is necessary to improve the level of the discussion about the subject matter, and especially for the next election cycle. I found out that we do not disagree much on the majority of issues, and we can agree to differ without it damaging friendly relations. I have discovered that he can be just as passionate about issues as I. We will go forward with our separate points of view in an intelligent and fair manner without any unfortunate exchanges of acerbic dialogue. I believe he is a fervent booster of this community, and that he genuinely wants it be represented by intelligent fair-minded individuals who have the interests of its citizens uppermost in their political platforms. I know he wants Amelia to succeed but with a maturity that overrides zealous dogma, and I agree with him. She and Shaun Moriarty are still the best candidates we can hope for in the next election. In any event it was great talking with Dennis, and I hope you and yours will have a very Happy Easter.

I appreciate this, and I agree with what you said. I would say that all of the kind things you said about me are true about you as well.

We're much better on the phone, don't you think?

Just being able to laugh about this was nice...I won't be wearing my stealth suit tomorrow!

Call me more often, will you? It's better to chat and laugh than going through what we did here (although after we spoke about it, the description was incredibly funny, I think we both agree?).

      Happy Easter, Jim!

    10. Well just getting back and reading the local blogs about the happenings around Southbridge I feel that I need to say a few things. To Dennis someone has to be a Idiot and it may as well be me. Thank god I am not an A--hole that would have made me feel real bad. Yes I agree with some of the things that are being said, yes the town manager needs to go he is way overzealous with raising taxes, sewer, and wow he is not going to raise the water rates we should be able to go to the bank with that. Yes Queen Kathy and her court needs to go also, they agree with the town manager and never offer any reasonable reason why. They keep saying that it cost more to do business and he is the professional and we should listen to him. During the budget sub-committee meeting watch who supports the increase and who oppose it. Councilor McDonald and Vandel will be the only one. Look at this year with how many new police and firefighters were hired when the position should have been frozen. The Amelia candidate, the problem with her is the fact that the transplant from NY Mr Jim is on her side, as I said before there is something wrong with this fellow and one should stay as far as away from him as possible, you can see how he waited 2 hours for you to have a confrontation with you and he would have done this in front of your family with no regard for them, this is what he is known for a no class person. As far as Rich I agree it may have been legal at the way he did things but I just think it was an injustice done, also the fact that during his time on planning and development as chairman they did nothing but the same is going on now. Rich is a very smart person his problem was who he was following and being guided by. be careful of Mr Jim he speaks on both sides of his month and watch your back. As you can see with the cluster ----the goings on with the school principle you will see who will be at the center of this problem, maybe the center of it is a wrong statement but who is involved watch for the name. Sometimes friendship is taken advantage of and I think BB went to far this time. Truthfully we agree on lots of things but just express them differently that's all.

  14. Well, all I can say is that upon her announcement, unsolicited donations to her campaign have already begun pouring in, as well as offers to volunteer. Not bad for this "loser" candidate in only the first day. Yup. She doesn't have a chance to win. LOL! I, for one, am throwing myself, everyone I know, and everything I have to get this smart lady elected. Not since Rich Logan has there been a more well suited person to lead the town. Yes, obviously the talent and brains to lead a town doesn't mean you win in a town like Southbridge, but she's someone that could energize the (relatively) small group of people we need for her to win. And, judging from the immediate and positive response, I'd say she already has begun energizing the people. I'm also keen on Shaun, but more on that as we get to know him more.

By the way, Rich, you'd be surprised who some of these "Anonymous" lurkers/bashers really are. Not the side you'd think. You'd be very dissapointed if you knew. I know I am.

But please keep guessing, it's very entertaining! 3. Not a mind reader; just an observer of human nature and psychology. You see, people are creatures of habit. One area that functions at the subconscious and/or automatic level is our styles and patters of speech and writing. You just have to pay attention to these things and it becomes pretty clear.

Also, on the psychological level, there are many entries under “Anonymous”, but you assumed I was speaking to you. Anyone (really) on the other side would have paid less attention to my comment. But you assumed I was talking about you and made a point to defend yourself. Why? Maybe I was speaking about the other Anonymous commenter?

      Yes, very predicable…..and very disappointing.

Oh, and to answer your question of closets and skeletons: I gave up anything even remotely resembling a closet decades ago.

    4. Pattern recognition involves identification of faces, objects, words, melodies, etc. The visual system does more than just interpret forms, contours and colors. Pattern recognition refers to the process of recognizing a set of stimuli arranged in a certain pattern that is characteristic of that set of stimuli. Pattern recognition does not occur instantly, although it does happen automatically and spontaneously. Pattern recognition is an innate ability of animals. As a student of the mind I was able to readily take one writer's words and turn it against them as a test. You've helped me advance my hypothesis by proving that I could take two people and turn them against one another by remaining anonymous and copying language patterns. The interesting part of this experiment is that chances are unless the person we're referring to is paying attention they don't even know that you think less positively about them.

  15. We'll see how much hot air these blowhards are filled with when she files her campaign report. Smart lady my a--. Way to go, United Southbridge! Throw more of your dough away!

  16. Amelia Peloquin is a serious and qualified candidate. She knows what's what and she understands politics. Dismiss her at your own peril.

    1. Really? Please. She's as serious as a Three Stooges movie. She know's what's what in her own little world, manipulated by you folks. Yeah, she's in great political shape making a play with her old friend with the Tornado victims, complaining about Fr. Peter, backing down at Citizen's Forum, winning an award for God's know's what, from the ACLU. No doubt when her background comes into play, and all of the things that she's written are out, and she's properly vetted, she'll be hard pressed to turn in her signatures. She's best to back off and not bother, and save herself and your worthless group the embarrassment of even trying. How's that landfill issue going for you? What about your lawsuit on the five vs. three? The Zotos lawsuit? The Beinema lawsuit? It's three strikes and your out, and your approaching strike five. We're better off with who we have than a fickle, finicky, flip-flopper like Peloquin. Mr. Fernandez, I'm sure that money is pouring in. Right. Pouring. In. She'll be the first candidate then to have adequate funds who gets trounced. On the other side, we're all laughing at your selection process. You make Fontaine and Martinek look viable with your actions, and that's not saying much.

    2. Cite three examples of her vast knowledge of politics? Lazo knows politics, that doesn't make him qualified. Go ahead, I challenge you to entertain, I mean, educate us on this "wonderful" candidate.

  17. Oh, yes, quite qualified. Just ask the ACLU or maybe ask her about her town hall protests. She'll be the newest laughingstock in the race. Bring it on for all to see!

    1. The funny part about this comment is that you actually cited reasons of why quite a few people would vote for her. Thanks for reminding everyone that she has consistently fought for people's voting access rights and their right to speech! No, really, thank you.

    2. You're twisted and delusional. Thanks for letting us know. We're aware of her secret, what's yours?
