Breaking News: Lazo, Martinek File Papers For Town Council

Update: May 10, 1 pm - Both Steve Lazo and Dennis Martinek have had a sufficient number of signatures validated to appear on the June election ballot.

Former town councilor and town council chair Steve Lazo and Southbridge resident Dennis Martinek today filed papers before the deadline to be on the ballot as candidates for Southbridge town councilors in the June election.

We must await notification that a sufficient number of their signatures have been validated for them to qualify.

If that bar is met then we can say, in typical Southbridge fashion, the race is on!

UPDATE: Incumbent councilor David Livengood fails to return papers.

  1. Hi, Ken, and thanks for posting this.

From what I see of the challengers, ANY combination of the three is better than the incumbents we have, and I support and cheer those that can win the two contested seats, and the one open one.

    Good luck, challengers!

  2. Throw the bums out! Out with the old, in the with new! Any of the challengers would be preferable with the two ditzes still in the race. Go new blood!

    1. I agree 100% Out With The Old and this includes Steve Lazo (no more Lazo's!!) and I say this goes for the School Committee also, not just the Town Council..
They all have had their runs, their chances to improve the Community as a whole. They are killing the Tax Payer's with their grandiose delusions, making this once great Community hostile and bitter.
Good Luck to all the New Candidates in both races...

    2. Correct me if im wrong but that family has been serving this town since the council started and the school committes since the early seventys and work to better this community not like what has been elected in the last four years. Very dirty negative people that dont belong there. Maybe you should call the Lazo's and sit down with them and discuss the issues you have with them u might end up with a positive outlook about them i know i did. So stop hiding behind the anonymous label when you do your bashing stand up and give your name what do you have to lose?

    4. How can you call people out for using Anonymous when you are using it yourself Anon 1:51? Wow, do you have double standers. Call the Lazo's and talk to them for what? Did ever stop to think it may not be a personal dislike, it's a political dislike. Every think that people feel as if the Lazo's run the show? I think everyone is entitled to their opinion for whatever reason and they are allowed to use Anonymous for whatever reason they choose. Let the voters pick who they may, and I am sure Scottie will get ready for more slamming next year when his seat is up on SC, he strikes me as guy with thick skin. I think he can and will defend himself when the time come.

  3. Hello Ken
Bravo for Dennis Martinek putting in his papers I think he would be a great councilor. I only hope that his dislike of the Police Chief wont interfere with his judgement. His main interest is the tax payers of Southbridge getting a fair shake. As far as Mr Lazo its best that he stays out of it he created problems when he was chairman and the town doesn't need that type of leadership any more. Mr. Martinek is best to stay clear of any of the candidates and run on his own. Good luck Dennis Martinek. Southbridge wake up make the changes that are needed and stop this town manager. Get spending under control VOTE for Mr. Martinek.

    1. This post was either done by someone craftily roping Dennis into admitting he has a problem with the Police Chief. A tactic that will alienate all the voters who like the chief because after all, the chief is the consumate politician who hates the Lazo's fervently.

Either that or this post was done by Dennis himself so he can do "damage control" regarding his run in's with the police chief and the department by giving him the opportunity to make the post immediately following it.

Either way, now it is out there and in people's mind that "Dennis maybe smart but he has a problem with the police chief". So Damage is already done to both Dennis and Lazo. This guarentees now that at least one of the incumbents will stay in office giving Clark and Nikolla the control of the council that they want.

If this post was done by the former, the objective was met. If this post was done by Dennis in the hopes of creating a campaign rebuttal string for him to do damage control, what a dumb move.

    2. Unlike Nikolla and Clemence who have a problem with everyone including the residents of Southbridge. You should stick to 'drawing' your own ill conceived conclusions. what about the damage control for doing nothing for the tornado victims? Get over yourself!

  4. Anon 6:55,

I understand and appreciate your comment/concern about my feelings for the Police Chief. Let me be perfectly clear (God help me, I sound like Nixon!):

The majority of the Southbridge Police force does an excellent job. Do I have a problem with a few of them, including the Chief?

Yes, I do, but at least I'm candid enough to admit it. I have many friends on the SPD.

Chief Charette actually was very helpful to me a couple of times, for which I am thankful. What I'm not thankful for was his bullying of me over...Tweets? And his well timed harassment of me through one detective, Sullivan, the night before a family vacation, which he was aware of?

Despite that, no, I won't let my feelings for him cloud any judgment, and let me state in no uncertain terms how I can demonstrate that (something Ken can verify, as well as Gary Fontaine, Deb Gregoire-Lefebvre, and Butch McDonald):

When we were on the Charter Review Committee, the issue of Town Manager versus Town Administrator came up (after discussion about a Mayor, which at first I hated, but then grew to like). As much as I disagree with Town Manager Clark, I came to his defense during this discussion.

I stated, and the record will reflect, that I said it wasn't right to hire someone as Town Manager, and then change his title to Town Administrator, as that would infer that he was demoted, and I don't think it's fair to toy with someone's livelihood.

The only way that I would vote in favor of a Town Administrator was if it went into effect AFTER Mr. Clark left the position, not during his tenure.

Despite what some people may think of me, I do have, in my humble opinion, a very good sense of fair play.

If you could verify to your readers, Ken, that what I'm saying is accurate, I would appreciate it.

I want a strong SPD, but I think, despite what Miss Nikkola thinks, that out of the box thinking is what gave us Edison, Einstein, Ford, Zuckerberg, and Gates. The inside of the box thinking is why this council and it's chair make this appear to be a carnival every two weeks.

    I'll make this promise:

If elected, I conduct myself in the most professional manner. I would never embarrass myself or my family, and would seek to change the perception of the Town Council from a bunch of bullies and arrogant fools, into a productive body that actually serves...

    The People of Southbridge.

    Cheers,

    Dennis

    1. This post was a bad move, all you've done is give the opposition something to bad mouth you about. You think you're Web smart but you're obviously not. You either were roped into all these admissions or you posted the anon post so you could put this up here.

What is noticeable is you don't say anything about how you can work with the other candidates. Isn't that strange that the post you're answering to said you should run your own campaign and not in combination with the other candidates or Lazo.

You were either out smarted by someone who posted anonymously or you out smarted yourself. Thank you Dennis, and thank you Ken for allowing negative campaign comments about Steve Lazo.

  5. I think Chairman Lazo was a much better chair than what we have now, talk about leadership hows that been working under Nikkola and Clemence? At least Lazo never reduced the minutes citizens can speak at a council meeting or call citizens names like PIGS AND BARNYARD ANIMALS! He did appoint Martenik to the charter review so i think they could work together. Think about who Lazo had to work with in the last three years. This present council is a rubber stamp with YES on it for Mr.Clark to spend away. So the two incumbents need to go and Any of the present candidates would be better including Lazo! Just say NO to CLEMENOMICS

    1. I agree, I can work well with Mr. Lazo. Something most people don't know: when I was appointed by Steve to the Charter Review Committee, he didn't ask me to take any stands one way or another, just to go with what I thought was in the best interest of the town. That kind of relationship I greatly respect.

  6. Now we have good candidates who can replace the vice chairwoman from Quebec and councilor Spumoni who has admitted that he might not be the brightest bulb. Even the bible thumper from Ohio threw in his powder blue disco jacket.

I dont blame him when he voted no roosters and chickens in town how do you think he felt you awful people so i suppose you would call his beautiful wife a hen? Nope, cause “Dusting Off” at The Town Hall will be “newly classified” as a recreational activity.

No doubt, W. Bird will take rightful honors in performing that delicate task.

      I wonder who’s PR..ing for Clemence & Spinelli?

  8. This is where and how you will do yourselves in. Right here on this blog. You're already acting like you've won when all that happened is you turned in papers to be on the ballot.

You automatically assume people who've been complaining about Clemence and Nikolla aren't going to vote for them and will vote for you. You fail to consider that there are people who are fervent about getting Spinelli and Clemence re-elected. People who benefit financially and otherwise from them being in office.

There are also their staunch voting block who will vote for them no matter what. There are people who are paid to post things here on this blog to rope you into saying stupid things that will convince the rest of the voters to go with the old Southbridge axiom "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know" so stick with Clemence and Spinelli.

So keep up this kind of stupid banter. Ken will continue to post the anonymous posts meant to rope himself and you others into posting your diatribes for all to see here permanently on the Web how you're not the better choice. Ken will do that because his ego is bigger than his intellect and his judgment.

You will blow each other up just like you did over Joe Marino's petition.

  9. My only concern is would Steve Lazo be allowed to run in the election if the rule is followed that your real estate taxes and water bills are up to date? I'm not saying that he's behind, but I think there were problems in the past

    1. That rule only goes into effect if the charter amendments pass. Even then they can't be retroactive.

  10. Well lets get this straight I use the Anonymous post because, # 1 I am allowed to #2. Dennis doesn't need my help to get elected #3 I know how people act and the attack that they will do to my family if I used my name #4 That's the way the ball bounces. The citizens of Southbridge are tired of the continuing practices of our town council and the town manager. This has gone on for way to long. The town has a chance to change this during the up coming election. So what if Dennis has a problem with the Police Chief at least he is up front about it and will be open minded when it comes to issues regarding the police department. We need people to say NO even if the police want something more not like the leadership now. Its time for the leaders of our community to send a message to all town departments that enough is enough. As a tax payer I can no longer handle the increases of taxes, water and sewer rates, trash fines, the list goes on and on. The community has a chance with any of the NEW people willing to run. Carlos if you want things to change than vote for the new if you want things to stay the way they are than don't vote for the NEW leave the old in.

  11. I have concerns that this proposed rule is unconstitutional. It could and will be challenged in court by many if implemented. Lets grow up, and look at the candidates experience, character what they have done for the town in the past and present. thats how they should be judged not by what you might have heard, this is nonproductive and negative! People have to stop the negativity it kills small towns, and people from running for office and you end up with whats sitting in office now. GROW UP!

  12. To anonymous who just posted the comment that began, “Oh dont forget mr. Livingood…”

If you want to make these allegations, you will need to substantiate them.
