Breaking News: Southbridge Charter Amendment Struck Down As Unconstitutional

According to highly reliable sources the Massachusetts House of Representatives Committee on Bills in Third Reading has eliminated the following proposed amendment to the Southbridge Home Rule Charter as being unconstitutional.

Section 2-2-2 No qualified voter of the town shall be eligible to run for the office of councilor if he or she is not in good financial standing with the town by being current in all bills from the town.

Thank GOD! I was beginning to wonder what “Country” I was living in.

A total embarrassment for those Local Representatives who forged & sponsored this infringement in the 1st place.

Our Political Right: “Freedom of Association” has been Constitutionally preserved.

  3. I've gathered that councilor Clemence isnt happy. Maybe we should all go to Rep Durant's booth at the Southbridge rain fest and ask what happened.

  4. Rain fest! Ain’t that right. That’s three busts in one week for this crowd. First the three grand we gave Chernisky and the downtown partnership that was a complete bust except for Jim Sotile’s delegation from China (which had nothing to do with CHER-nisky), then the tornado ‘have a hot dog’ barbecue yesterday and now this rained out bomb.

Don’t believe the glowing reports the Sowbridge News is going to print. All of these failed miserably.

THROW ALL THESE BUMS OUT NOW!!!

  5. I guess we have the new bylaw to thank. All the chickens are finally coming home to roost.

  6. Too bad. I think anyone who is responsible for making decisions regarding the town's budget and determines fiscal direction for the town and its residents should be paying their fair share. It's no secret who is not contributing; making excuse and exceptions is one of the reasons this town lacks credibitility. What's fair for one should be fair for all. In my opinion, a resident should be in good standing in order to serve the community.

    1. Should we also make sure that certain councilors aren't/haven't abused their role as council members by getting favors from the police when certain family members had a problem with the law? Isn't that more important? As long as incidents stay hidden, that's worse than getting behind in ones taxes. How about a pledge by those running for re-election that they have not used their positions to gain favor? That would be welcome, don't you agree?

    2. Um, okay so are you ready to fire the head librarian? Want the tax deficit numbers there and lowdown how the town assessor helped hide the $20,000 debt on the old favreau's bar so nobody had to pay? Happy to provide if your interested.

    3. Yes, I'd like to see it but that's up to Mr. O'B. Will wait with anticipation.

    4. I welcome any information of that sort as long as it is documented.

  7. I seem to remember during the video of the General Governmnet Subcommittee that Councilor McDonald said that the Charter review committee addressed this suggestion and that their research indicated it was unconstitutional. I know Mr. O'Brien was on the committee, but don't you think the others should get credit too?

    1. Credit certainly goes to all the members of the Charter Review Committee as well as those citizens who attended the public hearing in Boston.

  8. I believe my delegation was in fact the only outside group to attend. There were approximately 100 folks who attended. Nonetheless the personal tour in the hotel van impressed the delegation especially the new school complex. To be fair to the sponsors notwithstanding the D & P show my clients thought this town has some great attributes, and I believe all should support anyone any cheerleading no matter the source.

    1. So much for Clemence and her lawyers! Nice try. Leftover loser bullies from High School go down in flames. What's next--no one of Hispanic origin that HAS paid their taxes can run? Her group is one white robe and hood away from being an official Klan instead of a group.

      ROFLMAO
