Breaking News: Southbridge Summer Jobs Go To Favored Few

Earlier today The O’Zone received the following comment from a reader who identified themselves as “Job Opportunity Lost”:

“A notice for Ozone readers: The school department is hiring people to move teacher classrooms to prepare for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Rate is $16 per hour. Must be able to lift boxes. Possible job for many in our community who are currently unemployed. Interested? Too bad. Jobs were given to school committee members' children. Same school committtee members who voted the positions and the rate.”

This story has now been verified by multiple sources with minor modifications. The rate is in the range of $15 to $16 per hour and the people chosen were not merely the children of school committee members but of school department administrators and staff as well. One local employer, well-known for hiring local youth, was left high and dry by the mass exodus.

The O'Zone has not been able to find any indication that these positions were advertised to the public.

  3. I inquired about this with one of the principals because I thought my 16 year old could get some work this summer. This person said at the very beginning of spring, that candidates were already chosen...and yes to select kids in the H.S. As a middle class family, we do not "qualify" for the summer jobs programs and he can't find a job as a lot of places now only hire 18+. He is a great student, absent only 2 days from school. It should have been done by lottery. I am so sick of this B.S.! I am hoping after the election tomorrow, the dominos will FALL!

    2. This breaking news is another example of the corruption that being carried out by the Southbridge School Committee. Why weren't these jobs advertized? This is taxpayer $$. Why did they go to children of school secretaries, principals, maintenance people and school committee members? Ozone, please identify these people!! Did BB have anything to do with the hiring process?

    1. And your point is?
When your job is on the line, you do what the boys want. As they say, "it's not what you know, it's who you know."
