Ely Finalist in Dracut

Update - June 11: The Lowell Sun reports that interviews for the four candidates for School Superintendent will be conducted on Wednesday, June 13. Eric Ely is scheduled to be interviewed starting at 2 pm. The Committee could reach a decision as early as Wednesday evening.

Southbridge School Superintendent Eric Ely is one of four finalists for Dracut Superintendent of Schools according to an article in The Lowell Sun.

One of the four finalists had previously been chosen for the position. In March the Dracut school committee voted 3 to 2 to enter into negotiations with the individual, a special education director in Peabody.

A citizens group numbering about 100 subsequently demanded a more open and wide ranging search resulting in the appointment of a search committee. It was this committee that provided the list of finalists to the school committee on Monday, June 4.

The Dracut school committee stated its intention to make site visits to each community from which the candidates come this week.

Brent Abrahamson also has an interesting piece about another potential issue for the Southbridge school committee in its dealings with the Southbridge Education Association.

    2. Maybe if the district wasn't run by a bunch of back-scratching cronies, then Ely wouldn't be leaving. The Democrazy of Southbridge is in full swing.

  2. Well so much for the "I want to be closer to my family" excuse.

How much misinformation can this guy give...we like to bash some on the School Committee for what they have been doing, but how much don't we know about what has been going on with this Supt.

    1. Don't you think the School Committee is DIRECTLY responsible for Mr Ely being our superintendent? They did disband the Supt search committee when they didn't like their front-runner and who they had eliminated from the field? They did hire him (despite some seriously shady happenings in Schnectady)And I do agree, there is probably A LOT that has been going on with Mr Ely we don't know about!

  3. How much is he getting done for southbridge? Seems to me he is getting paid a lot of money & spends his time looking for a new job! Glad to see that's what he is getting paid for!!!!!!

    1. Lol. Pathetic excuse for an attack on the Sup.. He's an intelligent man who realized that our district is hopeless because of the 4-ring school committee circus and it's ringleader.

I read Brent's piece about the contract issue. I then googled the Southbridge School Teachers contract and found the following language.

    ARTICLE 5
    DURATION
5-1 This Agreement shall be in effect from July 1, 2009, to and including June 30, 2012, except as provided
below and shall thereafter automatically renew itself for successive terms of one (1) year, unless by November 1, prior to expiration of this Agreement, either the Committee or the Association shall have given the other written notice of its desire to modify or terminate it.

It would seem that the teacher's contract is set to expire and if they did not give proper notice that that wanted to negotiate the contract it rolls over for a year.

If that is the case then it would seem that the contract provisions stay in force for a year. Maybe no raises, but I am sure some how this will be the school committee's fault and not the union. Live and die by the sword, if the union is stating that the school committee is not following the contract then it goes both ways!!!

    1. You certainly may be right. As I indicated, we don't have the SEA's side of the story yet. It seems incredible to me that anyone would miss a step required to open negotiations; in fact, it would be remarkable. I would think that the SEA would choose new representation immediately.

I would not assume that it will ultimately be the fault of the school committee, but this power struggle has been going on for far too long. There is a vidictiveness that spans a great number of years.

The power struggle has cost a great deal of money in lawyers' fees and settlements.

Personally, while I understand your point, Anonymous 1:59 pm, I would not like to see a number of people lose collective bargaining rights and possible subsequent remuneration on a technicality.

This amounts to a forced wage freeze, which incidentally, was something the Committee had considered asking the union to do before according to one of the meeting minutes I read.

Again, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I see your point, I guess from watching this saga as it has played out. It seems that the School Committee has been blamed for everything that has transpired, rightfully so on some respects. But when does the SEA leadership take some responsibility for their part in all this. If they failed to notify the school committee as it is spelled out in the contract then someone should answer for that from the SEA.

Like I said before, the union has fought the school committee to protect their rights under the contract, as is their right The same should go for the Town, it is not a one way street as I see it. All these unions seem to want, want , want but when they are questioned as to their part in the process they seem to say, "well we forgot and you should just give, give, give" well I say enough is enough, I am sure in just the steps alone some of these teachers will be getting raises anyway. While here we are in the private sector scraping by with no raises and higher taxes.

Thanks for the respectful dialogue, we should all just agree to disagree and respect one another's opinions.

  6. Ken, Dave Williams wrote on your blog once, why not ask him to respond to this, if he can?

    1. Mr. Williams did not write here.
I received a copy of and reported a letter that he sent to his union membership.
If he wishes to write a piece on this issue I would be very receptive.

  7. If I were in Ely's shoes, I'd run for the hills. His hands are tied every step of the way. You can't do your job is you are being held back by the FAB 5 on SC. It's either their way or the highway. Gone are the days when opposing opinions were respected and representatives could be civil. As for the alternative, I can't imagine anyone less qualified for the position than the aforementioned principal....then I have to wonder, was that the underlying plan of a few? We all know that when a BFF of several SC members was not among those initially selected as a potential supt. candidate, the process was considered void and was started over again to ensure the good ol' boy network was alive and well. Bullies can only succeed for so long before karma comes back to bit them in the #$%#!

  8. The only thing I could say is there must be something going on, when you hear rumors that Ely is never in his office but out playing golf "allegedly" and it obvious he is looking for a out. I say vote out the incumbents break up the supposed fab 4, and lets see if the two new can stand their ground. Let Ely do his job to turn our school district around, even if that means changing Principals, Vice Principal, Admin's and Teachers. It's time for new faces and new ideas, on both the SC and TC. We have to stop complaining and act, I know I will not be voting for any incumbent on either. I already have made my chooses for both groups and I will hold my opinions on Ely and Clark.
    Blown Away

    1. Your comment makes no sense..if Ely is out playing golf all the time and is not doing his job and wants out, then let him go. What does two new memebrs do to make him do his job. The guy was all talk and no action. New school committee memebrs may just get snowed by him. He is a do nothing, big talker...but when the current SC takes him to task he hides and blames everyione else. A master of distraction he is...

  9. Many of the current SC members have been on the council for many years and the district has been underperforming for just as long or longer. Does it make sense to continue to vote for the same back-scratchers who would rather do favors and piss off the union than actually increase the performance of the schools? I've been in Southbridge for 26 years and I have never seen significant action to further engage the community in the quality of our district, quality of our teachers, quality of our committee, or even the drop-out rate!

You can argue that our SC is making progress by acquiring funds to build a school. But when no one shows up for class, and you have huge rates of drop outs and failures, how can you qualify a new school as progress?

  10. I found a song to attribute to Ely if he lives the district:

you can thank that political hag principe for hiring ely period!

    1. That is certainly not true. If you "watched the process" you clearly didn't comprehend it.

    2. If you really "watched the process" and concluded that the "hag principe" hired Ely, I fear you must have been under the influence of an hallucinogenic substance. It takes a majority vote of the seven member school committee (that would be four members) to appoint a superintendent. Period!

    3. Principe is soooo much more on the school side than any of u know!!! Ely is just a jerk who doesn't care about southbridge just wants to get out!!!

    4. Ms. Prencipe and Ms. Woodruff are the only two members of the committee who actually use OBJECTIVE reasoning to make decisions. Ms. Prencipe is probably the most knowledgeable of the state's educational by-laws, too. Not to mention good standing with the SEA. If you weren't an idiot, you would know this. Degregorio is barely a warm body, and the other four are just cronies who protect BB. I wonder why? Lazo is a bully, ex-high school jock/jerk who never grew up. And O'Leary wishes he was Lazo. Dominko thinks she's back in the USSR where you have no right to speak. Jovan, like Degregorio, is barely a warm body, he just takes up more space.

    5. Wow talk about trying to rewrite history.
Review the process - Prencipe wanted Mr Wood as Superintendent. (who BTW is doing famously right now at Tantasqua.)

Ely is leaving and can't do anything for Southbrige directly because of the FLAB 4's misguided majority.
No chairman can do anything without majority board support. Arrogantly, this current majority supports BB above and beyond everything else.
Ely should be running for the town borders to anywhere else where such "strange winds don't blow." :) iq

As long as voters keep returning these 4 to office nothing will change on the school side.
Sadly, DiGregorio will be taken out in the wash and the cleansing of the SC with elected new blood.

    1. If you really think that Ely's actions have nothing to do with the school committee, then why is BB still principal? I was at SHS when he was the music teacher. What I am about to say is not slander, it's the truth. Bill Bishop was not respected by the students when he was the band teacher, he is not respected as principle now, and he is grossly unqualified for a position in administration, clearly, because Southbridge High School suffers with more drop outs and failures than ever in the past. He's so good at his job, then explain that to me.

    2. Sleezy band teacher does not a superintendant make.
