Single Principal Planned At Middle/High School

Correction: 7/20/12 – It has been announced by Brent Abrahamson on The Massachusetts Observer that Amy Allen will become District's new Director of Instruction and Assessment. Obviously she would not be a candidate for the position of principal as a result. I apologize for the error.

The agenda for the next Southbridge School Committee meeting will contain a new business item calling for a single principal for the new Southbridge Middle/High School. Indications are that the current majority on the School Committee favor the proposal.

It has been reported to the O’Zone that, in light of this expected development, school superintendent Eric Ely had a meeting this morning with current Southbridge High School Principal William Bishop.

At the meeting Ely informed Bishop that, in the event of such a policy choice, Mr. Bishop would not be his choice for principal of the new school.

Indications are that, should there be a single principal, Amy Allen, current principal of Southbridge Middle School, would be the frontrunner for the dual position.

UPDATE: While Ms. Allen may be under consideration, it is by no means certain that she will receive the appointment.

  1. I am glad to see that Mr. Ely is being allowed to his job now...

  3. Oh how a Empire can fall, when the masses revolt... Gone are the Fab4 and now let's hope everyone can the jobs they were hired to do...

  4. This shows how quickly a dedicated group can change course and begin to correct the errors of the past. It’s too bad we can’t see the same on the town council.

  5. Way to go Ely!!! Unfortunately there are still 3 wind bags who will try to stir things up. I should say 4 because BB will be mouthing off all around town to anyone who will listen. This too shall pass...

  6. Ms. Allen isn't capable of running both buildings. Mr. Ely has another plan I'm sure. Lets see how long it will take for him to run this district into the ground. Be carefull what you people wished for. I'm no fan of the Fab4 but am also able to see that Ely is not the answer. I can't believe that I am the only one who can see this!

    1. I don't think your the only one, but if you come out and say anything that could be positive about BB or the Fab4 you get stomped.

  7. Ely is not the answer! I thought Woodruff and Prencipe saw that a long time ago. THE DEAL MAKING HAS BEGUN!
They must have promised Ely a two year extention if he got rid of Bishop. We have just exchanged one Fab4 for another. What a joke this school committee continues to be!

  8. If you think that the two new committee members are going to rubber stamp everything the new chair and vice chair want; you missed the boat during and after the election. The joke is you Anonymous 5:48. We all need to let them do their jobs and fix what was broken over the past 7 years.

    1. What exactly has been broken over the past 7 years. Examples please, I keep seeing that nothing was done, then get rid of MEP, PW and the remaining fab 4, if yu look back at all the votes over the past 7 years, i bet yu will find that the queen MEP voted with the Fab4 more often than not!!!

    2. There are too many examples to mention here. Some will come out and some won't. Some will be fixed and some, unfortunately the damage is beyond repair. i.e. qualified teachers and administrators who have left the system because of what was done behind the iron curtain. In my opinion, the biggest example would be the support and protection given to BB and the favors given in return. BUT...then again, I'm just a bottom feeder who wants the right to be in the same lunch line as everyone else.

  9. Anonymous 5:48 is right! Deals have been made. Gilbert, what about all that was gained over the past 7 years? Does anyone want to talk about that?

  10. Let's talk about it. Aside from the new school, which was entirely due to Dale Hanley, name the things that were accomplished.

  11. While I too heard some variations of these rumors, I have no information as to their accuracy.

If they are accurate, then I would have to question the appointment. Wells has not been a shining example of a well-run school. Perhaps an interim position is best. This position is far too vital to be filled without lots of dialog. Just my opinion, of course.

  12. Bye Bye. Mr. Bill you can stay at coco beach and take the Fab four with you...maybe you can all meet at the. Mill. Street office and plan some type of come back Goodbye

  13. Perhaps it's best for everyone to hold their comments until some official information has been released. And for the record, as a long-time resident and parent of a middle-schooler,I think some of these comments regarding Ms. Allen are completely misguided. She has renewed the faith of many of us who are part of the Wells Community, and I believe she would do a fine job at the new school if she is in fact appointed.

I will say this much, at last nights meeting with Dr. Bonda, the Parents and Community Organizations did not hold back about their feelings of the District. There were 3 members of the School Committee there (Pat, Mary Ellen and Kara) as well as Ely (who probably felt he should have stayed home).. One of the major complaints was lack of communication from Ely never returning calls or emails, the other major complaint was the violations of IEP's and Special Needs Services... After the meeting at least Pat, Mary Ellen and Kara (who was taking so many note she must have writer's cramp) took the time to talk with parents one on one. More then could be said about the former Fab4..

    1. Sounds refreshing. I think the new subcommittee Kara and Lauren requested will improve communications going forward. Once again, we need to let this school committee move forward. I have heard enough of the "3 million dollar deficit" and "I've been in Southbridge politics for 30 some odd years" blah, blah, blah...

  15. Well it must have been the fab4 fault that Ely does not return phone calls, emails or that IEP and other state mandated stuff isn't done. Maybe if he spent less time at the golf links and out with a staff member he would be getting things done...maybe the two new school committee members should have waited to get their feet on the ground and evaluate what is going on in the central office before giving him a nice new extension

    1. What part of, "We need to let this school committee move forward", didn't you understand? You need to get over yourself.

  16. Gilbert, I am all for letting this school committee move forward. But what the rush on the extended contract, especially given you synopsis of last nights meeting. I would have thought that the two new members of the school committee would have at least had a couple of meetings to evaluate everything prior to making such a quick decision. Or if the decision was made before the actual meeting was there secret meetings and deals going on. So much for the Accountability piece!!!

  17. What a shame that accusations of "secret meetings and deals going on" are the first thing you choose to say when things don't go the way you want them. Wait and see what integrity really means this year. I know it won' t matter to you because; once a crony always a crony.

  18. Enough with the secrets in this town. Let the public know what is going on. I just heard we lost the Music director for the High School. Mrs Bussiere was the best of the best and was never given the respect by the administration at the high school. So now the kids lose out because of the choices of the current administration. My child was so looking forward to going to the high school and having Mrs. Bussiere there as the music/chorus/show choir director, this will sadden many students who have had the pleasure of having her for a teacher! Southbridge needs to keep the good teachers not throw them to the side!
