  1. Perhaps Mrs. McLaoughlin could comment on today's personnel developments.
After being on paid administrative leave since last February, a special education specilaist has been returned to work. How would you like to stay home for nearly a year with full pay? Wasted $$$$$$$$$$$

Also today, a veteran guidance counselor who was placed on PAL in April and terminated in December received formal notice of exoneration of alleged MCAS testing improprieties from the Commissioner of Education Chester Mitchell. We paid her for months, paid the fabulous Merik & O'Connell law firm to oversee her termination procedure, and now we will have an extended State arbitration case. This case will most certainly be won by the counselor and cost us more $$$$$$$$$$.

We are still in serious litigious proceedings with several other "terminated" staff, not to mention at least one former principal. They too will most certainly win. More $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Of course, Merik & O'Connell will rake in more $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Keep all these $$$$$$$$$$ in mind as you write your February 1 tax payment !

Good thing those scores, graduation rates and morale keep going up !

Thanks to all of you who voted for McLoughlin and Donovan. Only 18 more months until you can vote them out of office (unless they decide to right thing and resign).

    1. All of these matters deserve to be aired publicly and severely questioned. Thank you for your comment.

  2. I agree that McLoughlin has played a major part of the School Committee's dysfunctional actions. Her ego has taken over. Donovan, she's just a pawn with no backbone. The people to look out for are Quinny and Congdon. They feed McLoughlin's ego and are just as power hungry as she is. Look out Southbridge; there's a new Fab Four in town.

    1. All True , but its not only her ego that is big. I think she needs to go to the juicer.

    2. LOL!! The blueberry girl looks just like her! AND YES; send her off to the juicer.

    3. It sad that adults can make fun of someones weight. If you don't agree with her politics fine, but to be so immature to poke fun such as this you should be ashamed of yourselves.

    4. Boo Hoo, when you get over your emotions and start to think let me know.
These members drove the former Chair away because they claimed she wasn't setting a good example by not having her child in the Public school system.
Now this chair is not setting a good example by reigning over a BMI policy with a written notification process for students while sitting up there looking like a morbidly obese blueberry. The shame is on her. Imagine the nerve of a school committee chair sending out letters to notify others when she is more guilty of the same offense.

    5. Has nothing to do with emotions. Has everything to do with not resorting to personal attacks just because you do not like their political actions, stances, or views.. As far as the former Chair, I agree 100% with if you are going to sit on the Southbridge School Committee then your child(ren) should be sitting in the Southbridge Public Schools.. And the BMI policy is a Mandate from the fine State of Massachusetts and it is School Nurses that check the BMI on the Children and they (the Nurses) send the letter home to the parents. If this School District would like to continue receiving State funding they need to follow all of the wonderful mandate that the State and Federal Government put forth. PS: Maybe you people should grow a set and put your names to your post...

    6. LeAnn is correct about the personal attacks. It takes away from any point trying to be made. As for being on the school commits without children in Southbridge Public Schools, I disagree, as most people that don't have them enrolled in the schools have concerns. The only way to rid those concerns is to be active in changing them, which, if you're serious about doing, you can't do from the guest podium.

    7. So not having children in public school system was a personal attack by members of this school committee and not a bad example. CHECK !
So The BMI notification is a mandate that the school committee voted on to update the policy on therefore making it their endorsement. Check!
However, being part of the M.O.B who would do that to the former former chair to get where she is a BAD example!
What does M.O.B. mean ? People who are angry or violent or difficult to control led by an Morbidly Obese Blueberry. Thats our school committee- Yikes!

    8. To all the Anonymous posters, who spew hate and insults and are not man or woman enough to sign your names.

    9. If you look you will see that the particular post you are criticizing is clearly labeled as humor, satire, parody.
Caricature is a long-accepted and employed element of parody. Caricature, by its nature, involves the exaggeration of physical characteristics.
While you may not like it, it is in keeping with that tradition. How many times has New Jersey Governor Chris Christie been caricatured because of his weight?
In a post that is oriented toward parody I have chosen to allow comments that I would consider inappropriate in another context. You cannot have any idea how many comments I have banned that make these kinds of snarky remarks in other contexts.
While you may not consider the comments funny, others have said to me that they thought the blueberry joke was hilarious. As an arbiter of what is published on this blog I have to make judgments as to whether or not something crosses the lines of good taste. In the case of a subject like weight, which an individual usually does have control over, rather than a birth-determined disfigurement or other disability, then I do not feel that the line is crossed. If that were not the case today’s T&G would not be featuring an article about an individual who lost a substantial amount of weight.
Humor is subjective and at times offensive to some. But I try to exercise discretion when posting these comments. The rationale becomes even more pertinent when you take into account the BMI rationalization, even if it was ex post facto.
As regards the issue of anonymity, I too wish that people were more forthcoming with their real names. But when one is mocking a public official on the School Committee, there has to be thought given to whether the anonymous commenter might have children who would suffer for their parent’s self-expression.
I do not expect this explanation to satisfy you, but I hope it does indicate that though has been given to the question.

  4. Christie had the GW Bridge, McLoughlin has Southbridge. Traffic being redirected to Quaboag.

  5. I listened to Mrs. McLoughlin speak at the PTA meeting earlier this week. I was very impressed. You mention "traffic going to Quabaug". Let's be honest; that started about 10 years ago. In that time, there have been changes in Administrators and School Committee members. The one constant is the teachers. I hope the Superintendant continues to get rid of the ones not performing.

    1. And what was a drip, drip, drip to Quabaog has turned into a flood.

As of January 1 the Southbridge school District has a new "Assistant Superintendent of Schools." Buzz's "special friend" Patricia Gardner assumes this new, needless, position. Central office gets more needless personnel while the students slide further into the sinkhole of the Southbridge Public Schools and the teaching and administrative personnel who can find a place to go jump ship.

    2. Impressed by her speech??? It was not her responsibility to speak to the PTA. It was her responsibility to tell the Superintendent to speak to the PTA. If you go back to the first comment on this post, money is being wasted. The School Committee should be focusing on budget (one of their primary responsibilities) rather than responsibilities that fall within the Superintendent's job description. Start protecting my tax dollars by holding the Superintendent accountable for the money that is being wasted. i.e. teachers on leave and being paid for it, teachers and administrators being terminated causing lawsuits and unemployment payments that we have to pay for, the cost related to grievances, legal fees and much, much more

  6. WHAT ????
There has been a revolving door of teachers that seems to be turning faster rather than slower during those same ten years. Was't it just 40 teachers who didn't return at the HS for this year? What young teacher would stay here to make their career here in the face of all mismanagement and finger pointing.
It was said earlier - After being on paid administrative leave since last February, a special education specilaist has been returned to work. How would you like to stay home for nearly a year with full pay? Wasted $$$$$$$$$$$ -
The former Sped Director Mike Myers naturally was praised on the way out the door. If this Special education specialist didn't change IEPs without parents knowledge then who did?
The one constant is the remaining teachers who have seen an incredible amount of dysfunction and turnover above them. I hope the Superintendent comes to his senses and starts to embrace the teachers who want to remain. He needs to start treating them with the respect they deserve and not collectively like those he randomly picks for dismal with or without cause.

  7. I am so disappointed with Kara Donovan. I voted for her for school committee and regret my vote. Every meeting I watch her and she has nothing to offer other than a few spelling errors in reports. She just does as she is told my lauren mcloughlin. When will Kara be her own person? Can't vote for her again if this is who she is. Maybe that jovan guy will run again.

  8. The allegations against a "veteran guidance counselor" and "special education specialist" stated in these commitments are serious and potentially criminal. How fortunate for them to be protected by the teachers union. If any private employees were found to be cheating or falsifying paperwork they'd be fired immediately!

    1. The SEA is so weak, no teacher can be protected by them! I guess time will tell. The "veteran Guidance Counselor" was investigated by the DESE. The union had nothing to do with it and he/she was cleared. When will you see that this superintendent is a bully!

  9. wow... I have not been on this site for a while... and I am truly grossed out by the lack of intelligence left by (of course) ANONYMOUS commentators.
    Cowardice. Nothing less.
I applaud anyone who is passionate about this town... and there are some informative suggestions, well thought out solutions on this site, but when name calling, and utter unintelligent insults occur... it lessens the effect of anything that is precise.

Making fun of anyone because of their weight is putrid.
Lauren is a human being... a MOTHER, a wife.. a daughter... an intelligent leader... that you just dont see eye to eye with. ... I'm just wondering ANONYMOUS how you would feel if your mom or daughter was bullied?
Wouldn't feel so good, would it?
What kind of example ANONYMOUS are you sending to the kids of the District who are in dire need of POSITIVE leadership?
Think of a way to help NOT hurt.
I just wish for one day people would follow the Golden Rule.
It would be nothing short of mind boggling at how much this town would accomplish.
    Sincerely,
    Suzy Geers

    1. Lighten up Francis!
If her mother or daughter hasn't taken her aside and said something to her for her own good then let this serve as positive notification. She has enabled herself and possibly by others to have acquired her current BMI status.
What is the M.O.B. doing about it?

    2. I hope that everyone has had their say on this matter.

    3. Suzy, you are correct. I stay anonymous because I don't want to be associated with this site but needed to say something about the crude nature of the comments here. This is not a perfect town but no matter what we dislike about them personal accounts cheapen the argument.

  10. This had gone way off from the original "speech" that as Ken stated was a parody. I used actual quotes Mrs. McLaughlin said on the dais last year and this year. I was hoping that people viewing the "speech" would remember some of these statements made and get a laugh out of how I tied them together. How this turned into personal attacks is a shame.
Ken, I am sorry you had to deal with this outcome. It was far far from what I ever imagined would happen.

As for the apology, you can believe whatever you want. I'm not going to grovel.
