Former Chairman of the Southbridge School Committee Patricia Woodruff has spoken out regarding Tuesday night’s meeting of the committee. In a statement issued exclusively to The O’Zone, Ms. Woodruff said, “I am very disturbed that the School Committee members and the Superintendent would publicly humiliate the Guidance Staff over a presentation.”
The O’Zone is honored by her decision to use our forum as the vehicle to make this statement. The full text of her remarks follows.
After hearing so much about this meeting last night, I decided to watch it here on the Ozone. I am not one for writing on these blogs but today is my turn to speak.
I am very disturbed that the School Committee members and the Superintendent would publicly humiliate the Guidance Staff over a presentation. The guidance staff was not given enough time (fault of the person who sprung it on them last minute) to do a well put together presentation. Therefore questions asked by School Committee members could not be answered due to lack of preparation time. If the Committee and the Superintendent are angry at how guidance is running they should fix the problem and not take it out on the staff to prove a point that our system doesn't have good leadership. So whose fault is it? Well in my opinion it is the top leader which is the Superintendent. He is the KING of the court and if his court cannot do the job the way he wants it then he better fix it. Put the blame where blame is due, not on the working class with limited tools to do the job right!!
If the School Committee thinks they can do a better job, then I challenge them to work a week in the Guidance Staff's shoes and really see what it is like. Then come back and apologize to the hard working individuals you just slammed in a public forum.
I hope the School Committee learns something when they meet with MASC because they certainly have no clue what their roles and responsibilities are (even though we went over it before) and realize they are only members when on the dais, at sub-committee meetings and when INVITED into buildings. I hope for the children of Southbridge this kind of behavior stops and the District finds a way to move forward without any more public displays of humiliation like last night!
