Breaking News: Southbridge School Superintendent Announces Departure

Ken O'Brien

Basan Nembirkow
Southbridge Superintendent of Schools Basan "Buzz" Nembirkow announced at tonight's meeting of the Southbridge School Committee that he will be leaving the position when his contract expires at the end of June.

Citing age and recent health issues, the announcement by Mr. Nembirkow was not unexpected. He had just returned from an extended medical leave which followed his presentation of the proposed FY 2015 school department budget.

That budget had drawn sharp criticism from Southbridge's interim Town Manager Robert T. Reed. Mr. Reed was especially critical of costs in the area of unemployment insurance for terminated personnel and tuition expenses incurred by students leaving the district under the aegis of school choice.

The departing Superintendent indicated that he felt that the district had made substantial progress in the areas of finance and organization as compared to the situation he found when he initially took the position on an interim basis.

In his remarks Mr. Nembirkow stressed that, despite the budgetary problems confronting other districts, there would be no need for the termination of Southbridge school personnel for lack of money.

He suggested that he would like to continue as a "mentor" for the district following his formal departure.

While steps had been initiated under the tenure of former Committee Chairman Patricia Woodruff to establish a Superintendent Search Committee, there was no indication at the meeting regarding the plans of the current committee leadership on how they will deal with the vacancy.

Nembirkow closed his remarks by saying that he guaranteed that MCAS scores would improve.

  1. Is that the same te same guy that "guaranteed" the MCAS scores would improve? Now he slips out the back Jack. I believe that was stated earlier this year.
    OK girls, your move

    1. We currently are paying for THREE principals of the new school! One sits at central office doing what? $110,000 per year to not run the school. Two "interim" principals running it into the ground. What a disgrace! Buzz and McLoughlin need to be held accountable.
Here's my new prediction - McLoughlin quits this summer when the new school committee members expose her publicly. The Boston news stations better get ready for "the crying fraud."
The townspeople better get ready for new lows on the MCAS scores.

  3. You better look out Ken. During public input Brent let it be known that he's coming after you and your kind. Now that he has shut down his own he's not one of you vile, pernicious blog monsters. Since we can't quote his own hypocrisies back at him from his earlier writing anymore, how can we doubt him?

I wouldn't of thought this just a few short years ago but... if it comes down to B.A. or S.L in the election I'm going with S.L. every time. S.L. is far more personable and deep down has a good caring heart for the kids. Besides watching the karma unfold on the bobble heads will create more of those pernicious blog monsters. - Oh NO!
Anyone else think B.A. is counting his chickens well before the election?

    2. Some people just can’t let go of the past. Excuse me now. I don’t want to miss Jack Benny and Fibber McGee & Molly on the radio.

    3. Brent A. is a clown. His "blog" was as pathetic as his teaching was. He wants a State takeover of our schools, and then runs for school committee. Don't worry, he won't win - a loser is a loser.

  4. What ever happened to principal search committees? Will we have a Superintendent Search committee or have the Bobble Heads already promised the job....

  5. This poster stated months ago that Buzz would leave between June and September - right again. He "guaranteed" that this years MCAS scores would improve - that will not be happening, they are certainly going even lower.
Thanks McCloughlin! You are the real problem with the school system. You are a fraud and are killing our kids. GO AWAY! Lazo is going to put you in your place!

"Breaking News?" Really O'Brien? This poster said it months ago - Buzz out between the MCAS preliminary scores in June, and September - when the scores are released to the public. You're the only one that thinks his back door departure in "Breaking News."
We can only hope that McLoughlin goes with him. Her husband wants to move out of town, Oz is very nice this time of year.

Here's some real breaking (the bank) news . . .
Another wrongfully-terminated district faculty member won her unemployment case today. Even though Buzz sent retired acting principal
Leach and on again - off again medical leave principal Allen, the arbitrator saw through the miscarriage of justice that has been handed
    this exemplary counselor.
Soon she will face off against Buzz and the
bobbleheads at an arbitration hearing which will most assuredly restore her position with
    all back wages.
$$$$$$$ wasted by McLoughlin and Buzz

  11. I am so very happy for this counselor! But I have to ask... Where is this money owed to her going to come from?

Because municipalities seldom lay workers off (except the Southbridge Public Schools) tons and cities pay the money to the State, who in turn, sends out the checks to the individual. Towns and cities do not pay into the State fund, as all other employers do.
So, the Town of Southbridge - NOT the school department - must pay. Since there is seldom a line item with the approximately $ 350,000.00 paid out this year, these funds come out of the town's free cash.
So to your question, you and I are paying, not the superintendent or the acting principal who wrongfully terminated her.
I can think of a million other uses for that money.

    2. More Money PleaseMay 14, 2014 at 8:05 PM

Hey Mr. Town Manager, Can you throw Buzz and the girls a quick million to clear up their endless wrongful-termination costs? Take it out of the dump fund.

  12. There goes another oneMay 14, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Charlton St Principal forced out too! His replacement was listed in the T&G today.
When you have someone who actually wants to stay here why force them out ?

So todays replacement totals = every principal and a superintendent.
Stability of leadership is not something this School committee can even attempt to lie about. However, I wouldn't rule out an attempt to do just that.

I understand that the person appointed to be the new middle/high school principal was not on the list submitted to Buzz by the selection team. Upon further investigation this person appears to be very lacking in the "experience" field. It also appears that her strongest qualification is that she works in Springfield.

There is also rumors floating about the school that the union is contemplating a "No Confidence" vote for this latest hire.

Since McLoughlin and Donovan joined the committee it has been one nightmare after another with leading our schools: In less than two years we are working on our fourth superintendent, our seventh middle/high principal, all new elementary principals, hundreds of staff and teachers. Do these fools really think they are doing a good job? They are damaging our students and have done irreparable damge to our district. Lauren and Kara - Please, please leave now!

    4. A 'no confidence' vote ? That would be perfect - but what does it matter? and risk the rath of Queen McLaughlin?? Hiring another Springfieldite to run any middle/HS - which is a very different animal than an elementary school - let alone the disfunctional one here in Southbridge !! After going on and on about making sure the new M/HS principal was going to be experienced - I am insulted that Buzz thinks we are all as gullible and stupid as PTA mavens on the SC!!
So why are all these losers from Springfield coming here!! Home of the sweetheart deal!!!
When I learned vocabulary in school - we were taught the difference between principle vs princiPAL....it has never been more clear - we have people in charge w/questionable principles selecting our princiPALS..Good Grief!

  13. Is there a provision in the Town Charter to Recall elected officials?

    ReplyDelete

    1. As with everting Southbridge, the charter makes it very hard to recall fools, dolts, idiots, and the such. That's why they're still there!
We get them for three full years in most cases. Unless they quit, fail-to,appear, or forget they were elected. And yes, SoSouthbridge has a spate of that recently.
The only way to prevent what we have on our elected panels is to stop believing the campaign BS, is., more transparency, more parental input, creation of search committees, "quaranteed MCAS improvements, etc.
We need to elect people with business sense, common sense and human decency. Now I ask you, "What's on our elected bodies?"
McLoughlin, Donovan, Quinney, Nikola, Clements, etc. They all lack common sense, business sense, and even the most basic human decency.
But hey, that's what you'all voted for! Voter regret? Stop listening to pre-election BS. Vote for those that have done more than run a PTA bake sale before handing them the responsibility of running a 23 million dollar business. Just because they had cute apples on their campaign sings you voted for McLoughlin and Donovan?
