Okay, Let’s Move On

Ken O’Brien

The School Committee has moved on – and so should we.

The fact of the matter is that they have decided to ignore the will of the public.

We, as the voters, have no choice left but to deliver our verdict.

First, and foremost, we have no choice but to elect Ray Page, Scott Lazo and Christopher Olivo.

The remaining two candidates, LeAnn Pate and Bent Abrahamson, simply have no place on the committee.

LeAnn is, more than anything else, an advocate for special ed. While I realize that this is an important issue, the reality is that 20% to 25% of school spending nationwide is devoted to this issue. We need people who will focus on the needs of the core constituency of the district.

As for Bent Abrahamson, we have been there, done that and moved past it. And that amounts to just about any position you want to take. The fact of the matter is that we have here an individual who has taken every position on every issue. A vote for him boils down to a vote not to decide.

So let’s turn to the Town Council race,

We have six candidates running for town council. We have three open seats. The candidates are

            Miguel Estrada
            James Marino
            John Pulawski
            Gus Steeves
            Albert Vecchia, Jr.
            Paul Zotos

James Marino and John Pulawski need to be dismissed immediately.

I’ve dealt with Marino before. The first and foremost reason for dismissing him as a candidate is that he has confessed to violating his oath of office.
COUNCIL OF THE WHOLE MEETING, MONDAY, MAY 22, 2006
AGENDA ITEM #18. COUNCILORS' FORUM
Councilor Marino read a statement regarding the newspaper articles in the prior week, regarding leaking of confidential information to the newspaper. Councilor Marino stated he was the one who did it. He stated he did this to bring more of this into the public eye, as everything discussed had already been well publicized. He stated also he wanted to lift the lingering shadow over the Town Council. He stated it wasn't his intention to drag this through the mud anymore, and he wanted to put an end to it.

Second, of course, is his support of the current referendum to return Southbridge to a town meeting form of government.

John Pulawski is also supportive of that motion. So let’s stop there. There’s no reason to support people who want to undermine the current form of town government.

Finally, there’s Albert Vecchia, Jr. I guess all that I have to say about him is to point out that he is a wacko. Just look at the report of the State Police on the leak of Executive Session materials the last time he was on the council. I hope that you don’t need more.

That leaves Estrada, Steeves and Zotos. I’ll deal with them in future issues of the O’Zone.

I don't think that Apple deserves the term "Wacko", I have scanned the cited report and can find nothing in it proving that Apple did anything wrong. You may say where there is smoke there is fire, but there is smoke around the heads of each of the councilors who were interviewed.

That brings me to the two true wacko's in the race: Zotos and Pulawski. Maybe you should put together a video of their finest moments speaking on record at TC meetings. Both have made fools of themselves in front of the council on various issues but mostly on issues concerning the landfill.

If you are going to let the Wacko dogs out then let them all out.

Not knowing Mr. Estrada, my comment is directed at the other candidates
When I look at the other 5 numb nuts, is it any wonder why I'm voting for a town meeting format?

I just read an interesting sign at a diner. "We are just a few clowns short of a circus.". Well with cast joining what already sits there, I believe we will be competitive with Barnum & Bailey's!

  4. Actually is you post everything Big Bad John has said about the Landfill and put it on channel 13 you"d assure Hus election! Even Councilor Marcucci confirmed in a January council meeting that Pulaski was"100 correct about the Landfill".

It is too bad that Zotos got fired but if he put up on cable what you suggest they would fire him again. Clark did not want both sides to have a say-just the guys from Vermont.

Apple sending himself threatening mail, lies about the landfill road...his shenanigans regarding the softball league. These are reasons Apple is questionable.

Zotos and Pulawski might not have what is called a face for TV, but it is evident now after the passing years and the condition of the landfill water table prove they were doing their homework.

Other matters I remember JP discussing at citizen's forum have been protecting the people walking from the Village to Big Y Plaza with a much needed sidewalk, keeping Reyclevank( which saved me $500 a year), not making the landfill even worse with contaminated dirt, and keeping regular chlorine in our drinking water instead of using ammonia treated chlorine.

What is wacko about these things? And Zotos had a great idea on using crossing guards from the schools on Main Street. In the good old days Police were walking the beat and did that.

  7. The landfill was front and center more than 15 years ago. A group of people (10 exactly)
filed suit against Wood Recycling. The group predicted exactly what was going to happen.
Nobody listened, people laughed and mocked us 10. One Councilor had the gall to say
If you don't like it-move". Well, most of us did. After our law suit was complete I got out of Dodge. I now reside in a small town right across the state line. Every week I go to the transfer station and deposit my trash, as I drive back home I get this nice warm feeling knowing that my trash is headed to the Southbridge Landfill! The Town Council was a joke back then and not much has changed since. You can't replace stupid!

  8. Get Brent - BrentJune 6, 2014 at 8:29 AM

Did Brent Abrahamson sound like Scott Lazo's jilted lover last night. We have a school district sinking faster than the Titanic, and BA has nothing but "kill Lazo" on his mind. I hope he wins - Southbridge needs another douche bag !

NO! We do not need Brent's arrogance on the school board there is enough there already! I referred to urban dictionary for the precise word to describe his performance last night and found - arrogantasis.
Its definition can be found here:

He is not a sincere candidate but only a spoiler attempting to stand in the way of another. He is only trying to buffer the girls for political reasons.

  9. No Graduation on TV ??June 7, 2014 at 4:06 PM

More of that there "Transparency" our current school committee leaders promised us when they ran for office two years ago. Our school district's biggest event, Graduation, was not televised. I've watched the graduation on TV for decades, not in 2014. Why? We just spent 75 millions dollars for a new state-of-art school with all the bells and whistles, including a very expensive cable TV studio.
Again, why not televised? These students, and their families, worked to earn this milestone. The entire community shares in the pride of these young people; they have also shared the expense of educating them. Many of us can not attend the ceremony due to medical, transportation, work, or other issues.
How can our school system continue to work in a vacuum? McLoughlin said in a recent News article that "they need everyone's support." Had to support something that works in darkness. 24 million dollar budget and we can't our graduation ceremony televised! Shameful!

  10. Is there any truth to the rumors that our school district is going to change the traditional red and white to blue and black? After seeing Lauren McLoughlin in red at graduation it might help her appearance. Donovan and Congdon would also benefit from such a change, too1
