Breaking News: Steven Bliss Appointed Interim Superintendent

Ken O'Brien

At its meeting Wednesday night, by a vote of 6 to 1, the Southbridge School Committee appointed Steven Bliss as interim Superintendent for the Southbridge School District. The sole dissenting vote was cast by committee member Erin Quinney.

Bliss recently announced his departure from the position of Superintendent of the Dover-Sherborn school district.

Mr. Bliss had twice before been a school principal (in Southbridge and Sturbridge), had served four years as an assistant superintendent and two years as a superintendent. In addition, from all I have been able to find, he received glowing comments from all of those concerned with his previous positions.

I am sure that all the boo-berry bobbleheads out there already have their spin machine rev'd up and ready to sling monkey poo. To quote his majesty the all great and wonderful "O": "Elections have consequences."

With that being said, Bliss is a known quantity; he knows the lay of the land; and, he has ties to the community. Bliss brings with him the experience of having been a "real" superintendent.

Hopefully, this will bring to close the era of bad feelings and bad leadership that led to the state we are in at the current time. Let us shed ourselves of the remnants of Buzz and the Springfieldnistas and get on with the daunting task before us of rebuilding the once great Southbridge School System.

    1. Let's hope that the students will now become the focus of everyone involved; unfortunately there will always be naysayers - no matter who wins the election; every administration makes mistakes - but it also should learn from it's mistakes; it will be a long road back but it is refreshing and hopeful that the new SC has hit the ground running - as was promised prior to the election.

Sharon by all means now that you got your wishes met lets everyone focus on the students as if that was never the case before. Pretty darn gone nice of you to over look one of the most outrageous processes of political corruption Southbridge has ever seen. The long road back was moved backward and not forward by this sham of a process. The whole lot of them with all this experience, knowledge and professional are morally bankrupt. Bliss participated and he of all people DOES know better. His participation without proper advising of OML and other concerns makes him not our savior but just another member of the good ole boy network dominating our school district.

Sharon, don't worry it is just another disgruntled, negative person. One who should read the OML. The meeting was properly posted and on time. It was an open meeti,g no closed executI've session. The agenda stated interim superintendent and that is what was discussed. The only issue I see is that the agenda item may have had additional clarification. To the hater, file an OML complaint, Manna posted the law, challenge it.

Step up and do something if you think it was wrong or just hide.

  2. I don't know, 6 months as an Assistant Superintendent and then 6 months as Acting Superintendent vs Mr Bliss's experience. I think it was a great move.
