Southbridge Superintendent Resigns

Southbridge School Superintendent Steven Bliss resigned his position last night.

Mr. Bliss cited health reaons as well as concerns that the post was not the right fit for him.

Reporting on the departure of Superintendent Bliss, The Worcester Telegram noted:

Mr. Bliss, in an email to the Telegram & Gazette, said that in addition to the health matter, he also found that the job was not the right fit for him.

Mr. Bliss said he had not completed contract negotiations with the School Committee as of a couple weeks ago.

After a couple of medical issues spanning the past two weeks and, “much soul searching, I decided that the work of the Superintendent is simply not a good fit for me in that the work for the most part had little to do with teaching and learning and causes one to be further removed from working with students and teachers in a meaningful way,” he said.

“I have decided to pursue other professional opportunities in the field of education, be it in the form of educational consulting work or in a private school setting,” Mr. Bliss said.

Well, well, well a little deja vu from the "Why did they diss Bliss " Blog post.
Sounds like vindication and abandonment to me.

To better than Stanton - statements without facts to back them up are useless and are generally seen as dirty politics.

Did Stanton do any of the things that Bliss has done over the years?

Bliss has an MO moving on quickly - Bliss said. “It is very important to me to come into a district to make changes, to get momentum moving and move on. It’s kind of my MO. And everyone knew that coming in.”

Bliss was overly involved in an at risk school choice student from Southbridge not only involving their legal eligibility to attend Tantasqua but also in allowing use of the School pool on the weekends without direct supervision or rental fees.

Bliss starts the great Crime and Punishment debate when he over reacted to the Senior week Relay for life prank in a rather DUCKY way. Resulting in the suspensions being reduced and graduates allowed to walk at graduation .

Bliss is being less than honest in his reasons for leaving Dover Sherborn if he is applying here for the very same position and without a job listing existing.

Bliss added that working with children and families is a mission that speaks to his heart.
His decision to resign, as he put it, is rooted in the students.
Bliss added, “At the end of the day, however, and as I have long believed, one must truly love the daily tasks he/she is called upon to do in his/her job, and that is an obstacle I simply cannot overcome. Simply put, I miss being with kids and miss the daily interaction found in the classroom and in the schools.”

So, how exactly is Bliss better than Stanton? Thought so!

After the abominable record of the last school committee there has been precious little time to alter the trajectory of the district before the October 19-22 site visit. The reality everyone has to face now is that there is most likely to be a state takeover by the end of November.
Thank you to our, now out-of-towners McLoughlin, Donovan and Abrahamson as well as Quinney.

Wow, saying something 5 months earlier is late in your world?

This School Committee recruited and hired Mr. Bliss. His expiration is an all time new record of shame. This School Committee maybe more political than the last but it will also be the School Committee of record when the state takeover. This School Committee has as much shame and in a shorter period of time than the last. Some members of it have previous years experience that they love to boast about. I don't know how you react to the boasting but I yell at my tv "and look what shape its in! "

  2. A person's word and character are all that you have, this individual, I can't call him a man as he does not meet the definition, has let this community and the children, that he claimed he cared about down. He is not telling the truth and I hope that whatever district or school he goes to does there homework on him. He begged to come here, he knew what the job entailed and he made everyone look like fools. I for one am not going to be taken for a fool once again!!!

  3. So, when does the search begin?

    1. Call in a search partyOctober 16, 2015 at 7:27 PM

Search, what search? Was there ever really a search to begin with? Only a fool would believe there was, think back to April when Condumb held up Bliss's resume'. This was all in the works to bring her friend in to savior, lmao how did that work out for ya Condumb. So quick call in another search party, so that we can bring back Amy Allen and pretend we did a awesome search and there is just no one better then she, like they said about Bliss. How about we just lay out a giant SOS on the top of Lazo's High School and hope the state sees it in time.

    2. Save our Schools --SOSOctober 17, 2015 at 7:16 AM

Bliss saw the writing on the wall and did not want to be the superintendent of record when the state takes over the district. Some little birdie must have flew into the offices at 25 Cole Ave and whispered in his ear about what was happening at the state level.

As far as bringing Amy Allen back, there are several reasons why that would not be a great idea. One, she has no experience at being a superintendent. Two, She wouldn't want to be the superintendent or record either. Three, she was one of the ringleaders of Buzz who was instrumental in getting the district to this point. She was one of his key hatchet wielders. And four, she failed as both the Middle High School and Wells Middle School principal.

What this district needs is another Dr. Thayer or even another Dr. Hanley. Someone who has a terminal degree and experience with in an under-performing district. That is what the state will bring with them when they take over.

  4. When the Council crossed the nine and announced in public that the schools were in a death spiral, it was over for our schools. That vote of no confidence made by a political body only slightly more functional that our SC did more harm to Southbridge than the '55 flood.

The State will be raising our taxes now. Finally the children will have the benefit of a properly funded education. We have money ( $1.75 Million!!!)for toilets at the airport, but we are still short on text books. Time for a vote if no confidence in the politicians that voted for the death spiral pronouncement. The firmer SC gets an F, the Council gets a D-, but the airport gets toilets that cost more than the thrown of Queen Elizabeth!

Are we actually going to celebrate a Bicentennial ? What are we celebrating?

    1. More than likely the State will be pumping more money into the District, but just as likely nothing will change.

  5. I think that the sex scandal and the impending site visit from the DESE has more to do with the Savior Bliss's resignation. Especially, if the rumor is true that he sent the search committee an email saying that he would pull his name if he had to go through a competitive process. He is getting out before he is relieved by the state when they take over. Because, that is what happens, the state relieves administrators not teachers.

  6. I want to come to Southbridge, I have a passion for the students and families in the District, let me upset the process, let me sell you some snake oil!! Bliss you are a fraud and a disappointment !!!!!!!!

  7. It seems those "medical" issues have come to light now as Steven Bliss has to be "CRAZY" to get arrested for soliciting sex from a Worcester Police Officer. Sad for him, but is there more to this story?
