first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany.
Chaplin's film advanced a stirring condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito
Mussolini's fascism, anti-Semitism, and the Nazis.
Can you imagine if this film had been withdrawn
prior to release because Hitler objected to it?
