Where’d That Number Come From?
Ken
O’Brien

2/15 See UPDATE at conclusion.
Yesterday’s Southbridge News carried a letter from
the Chairman of the Southbridge School Committee.
In the letter the Chairman railed against what she
considered to be an affront to the hard-working staff dedicated to the
education of the town’s students under trying circumstances.
She goes on to criticize the, “…relentless
behind-the-scenes efforts of some to perpetuate chaos in the school district,
simply so they can claim everything fell apart after Mrs. Donovan and I were
elected. This is not unlike children who throw tantrums and try to break all
the toys so no one else can use them.”

(Almost) A Year Of Healing
Ken
O’Brien
I was mistaken about Shaun Moriarty.
After initially encouraging his run for town
council, I failed to endorse his candidacy.
After his election, I criticized his seeming lack of
knowledge of government and politics.

Fact Checking The Southbridge School Committee Chairman
Ken
O’Brien

There were a number of items in that article that
warranted fact-checking. However, given that the article focused upon the
Superintendent, it was felt that his remarks justified primary attention.
In the interim, though, I have been bothered by a
remark made by the august Chairman of the School Committee. In the report she
is cited as follows: “Chairwoman Lauren C. McLoughlin noted that making an
investment in the schools can improve a community's real estate market, as has
occurred in Lawrence and in Mr. Nembirkow's former city of Brockton.”

This Cannot End Well - Video: Southbridge School Committee Meeting October 22, 2013
In this regard, the assumption of the leadership of the Southbridge School Committee by Lauren McLoughlin could not possibly be any less auspicious.
It was characterized in its hallmark moment by what
would be generously characterized as ignorance, but more likely as outright
deceit.
Most disturbing was the regrettable involvement in
this exercise by as distinguished an officer of the court as Demetrios Moschos
of the firm Mirick O’Connell. I can only wonder if he will have the integrity
to admit his error and thus require those responsible to hit the reset button.

Chairman Resigns from Southbridge School Committee

Reading from a prepared statement during the
Chairwoman’s Announcement segment of the meeting, she said; “It appears to me
the politics of the school committee have overtaken the true mission of this
committee. There seems to be a
prevailing opinion of the current majority of the school committee that this
would be cured by my absence. While I do
not share this opinion, I feel it is only fair to our children, who should be
the true focus of our actions, to allow the majority to have their way. I therefore resign from the committee to be
effective at the conclusion of this meeting. I hope that this gesture will
encourage the remaining members to focus on what is important, the youth of
our community.”

What Do You Think?
Kenneth M. O’Brien
The election is over.
The incoming Southbridge Town Council will consist of Denise Clemence, David Langevin, David Livengood, Darlene Marcucci, Laurent McDonald, Catherine Nikolla, Pamela Regis, Lawrence Spinelli and Conrad Vandel.
Who do you think should be Chairman, and why?
Who do you think should be Vice-Chairman, and why?
What should be the council’s first priority and what should they do about it?
How should the council deal with the report of the Charter Review Committee and their recommendations and why?
Speak now or forever hold your piece!
