Video: Special Southbridge School Committee Meeting, October 10, 2013

Video by Paul Zotos

Following the surprise resignation by School Committee Chairman Patricia Woodruff at its last regular meeting, the committee held a special meeting on Wednesday, October 9. The special meeting had been scheduled prior to the regular Tuesday night meeting. It was attended by five of the remaining six members, with Dr. Thomas O’Leary absent.

It was billed as a meeting intended to address expectations and goals for the committee during the coming year. However, prior to Mrs. Woodruff’s resignation it was widely believed to have her ouster as its true objective.

The meeting was held at 25 Cole Ave., presumably away from widespread public scrutiny. We are grateful to Paul Zotos for recording the meeting and making it available to The O’Zone.

Mr. Zotos noted that the final installment ends rather abruptly. This is due to the fact that the remaining time was consumed with a back and forth as to whether to adjourn without any additional meaningful business being conducted.

  3. I watched this whole set of videos
In one respect it was the complete waste of an hour.
On the other hand, it was a troubling illustration of a complete lack of purpose. If there was a reason for this meeting other than the rumored reason to remove the chairman, it totally escaped me.
There was no clearly defined guideline for discussion or any outline of the issues that needed to be addressed. There was a total lack of leadership from the acting chairman. The only intelligent contributions were from committee member Dominko. Unfortunately, her lack of engagement thus far this year does not bode well for her providing the needed leadership.
The last segment ended with little more than an effort to portray all of the district’s problems as a function of the vacillation of the state bureaucracy. While that may be a factor it does not excuse these ego driven neophytes from proving that they are not up to the task of seriously addressing the district’s problems.

  4. Thanks to Paul Zotos. I had to laugh when the chairwoman spoke about transparency while they were holding a meeting where they would be hidden from the cable cameras.

  6. Under the guise of expectations, goals and protocols, the actual purpose of the meeting was to remove Mrs. Woodruff as chair. Since she resigned one day prior to that meeting, it would have looked very bad for them if they cancelled the meeting. It was quite obvious they - were ill-prepared (especially the "chair"); did not really have a specific agenda; broke the open meeting law (by voting on accepting Mrs. Woodruff's resignation which was not on the agenda); do not know their role nor responsibilities as school committee members (with the exception of Dominko).

  7. After viewing the videos, the committee should do what is best for the school system and elect Dominko as chair. They will certainly certainly get things done. If any of the 4 other women become chair, I foresee endless chatter with no results.
