DESE Slide Presentation On Southbridge District Review

  1. This is concerning, especially the Student Support Standard. That standard has many challenges, yet no strengths. I’m in support of more DESE oversight, but not a complete takeover. I think that Lazo has what it takes to turn the district around!! As much as people disagree with him, and the committees decisions, I think that we finally have much needed stability. The work will continue, and the district will eventually see student growth. It doesn’t happen overnight, and DESE must understand that. I agree with Lazo that this needs to be a partnership between his committee, the state, and the schools. We finally have things going in the right direction, and a state takeover will not do any good to anyone. It will destroy Southbridge even more.

    1. That's the point, it hasn't happened in over ten years. Let's have the state try its hand. Clearly local sources haven't succeeded.

  3. It is all well and good to say that there maybe a chance over the next ten years, but, as was stated, it has already been over ten years. However, the State does not need to take over the schools. What the state should do is split the district in half and send half the middle / high school students to either Tantasqua and Dudley Charlton. Then let the school committee control the elementary schools. Yes it would wound Southbridge for a year or two, but in three years, it will be as normal and in ten years people will only vaguely remember what it was like now.

    1. It's kind of like nuclear fusion. Clean, limitless energy is always just 25 years away.

I worry about the ELL students it is a no brainier, to have bilingual teachers for them. How on earth do we not have that in place? What's going to happen to this town few years from now when these students are adults with no education no skills they will likely turn to crime and we will all be hurt by it.
