Satire vs Hoax

Ken O’Brien

Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues

Hoax: something intended to deceive or defraud

As a way of educating my obviously ignorant (and perhaps deceitful) detractors regarding the recent issue I have raised regarding the activities of Town Councilor Kristen Auclair, I reprint an article written by Matt Rock on Newsvine on May 27, 2014.

Satire is not meant to be a "hoax" (an open letter to the team at IFL Science)

As some of you may know, I used to be a frequent writer here at Newsvine, probably best known for writing political satire.  That satire was deemed good enough for someone to hire me and steal me away in 2011.  If you don't know who I am, well, now you do.  And with that introduction out of the way, let's get to the content at hand.

Are You Qualified To Be A Southbridge School Administrator?

Ken O’Brien

Recent developments have created another opening in the administration of the Southbridge Public School district.

This comes atop other vacancies, both voluntary and enforced, that have arisen in recent months. There is also the prospect of unexpected departures that may coincide with the end of the current school year.

With all these factors at play those at the top are confronted with the daunting task of winnowing a large body of potential applicants down to a manageable pool of viable candidates.

Music To Present A School Budget By

Ken O’Brien

Budgets are boring.

However, when you get right down to it, there is no more critical function in government.

Budgets are where the true priorities of an administration are given concrete form and expression.

Still, it would be nice if there was a way to make the dry and often arcane numbers that constitute a bureaucracy’s budget more accessible to the general public. What is needed is some mechanism that reveals the true intentions and message being conveyed by those responsible for the way money expropriated from the public is going to be spent.

Exclusive: Homer Simpson Comments On “Marino Madness”

Ken O’Brien

The perennial pest-ition godfathered by legendary miscreant James J. (Joe) Marino is once again making the rounds of Southbridge.

For both of you who are unfamiliar with this now annual diversion, allow me to recap.

Mr. Marino and his band of occasionally “head-butted” followers are once again circulating a petition to restore Southbridge to a town meeting form of government.

December 23 - Happy Festivus (Video)

                                           Ken O’Brien

Are you feeling a little left out!? Are you put off by the crass commercialism of Christmas?  You don't celebrate Chanukah. Kwanzaa just isn't your thing. And, you don't even know what Divali or Ramadan is.

Then, come and experience the joy and the miracle of Festivus. One might say that the Festivus holiday is a miracle in itself.

Still not sure if Festivus is for you? It's non-denominational. So, everyone can partake. The Festivus slogan is "A Festivus for the rest of us!" And, that means you, too. So...........
