Recent developments have created another opening in the administration of the Southbridge Public School district.

This comes atop other vacancies, both voluntary and enforced, that have arisen in recent months. There is also the prospect of unexpected departures that may coincide with the end of the current school year.

With all these factors at play those at the top are confronted with the daunting task of winnowing a large body of potential applicants down to a manageable pool of viable candidates. 

A Tribute To Student Achievement II

Back On November 20th I posted the first of these pieces that paid tribute to the third and fourth graders who excelled in their performance on the MCAS.

Honors for those in higher grade levels who also excelled on the MCAS were planned for the next School Committee meeting. Regrettably that was twice deferred due to inclement weather. But they are equally worthy of recognition for their efforts. They are also, it goes without saying, an embodiment of the scriptural dictum "honor thy father and thy mother".

In the midst of all the criticism I level at our town and its government, the accomplishments of individual citizens are often overlooked.

Such achievement is especially noteworthy in the youngest of our community. These accomplishments are not only a tribute to their own efforts. They also represent the embodiment of that all-too-often forgotten commandment, “Honor thy father and thy mother”.

Success in the academic realm has been all too rare in our school district. The third and fourth graders who excelled in their performance on the MCAS are worthy of recognition for their efforts. They are a tribute to their parents. And they are a reflection on the teachers who are all too often the subject of criticism.

Breaking News: Ely Eliminated In Dracut Superintendent Search

According to a twitter feed from John Collins, a reporter for the Lowell Sun:

7:12 pm [Former Dracut Special Education Director Steve] STONE HAS THREE VOTES and counting. HE WILL BE Dracut's new superintendent of Schools. Vote to follow.

7:23 pm Unanimous 5-0, Dracut SC votes to make Steven Stone next superintendent. Board now enters neg's w/'Supt-elect Stone.

Is Ely Moving On?

Less than two years after succeeding Dale Hanley as Southbridge School Superintendent, Eric Ely is apparently seeking greener pastures.

According to Knoxnews.com, Mr. Ely is among ten semifinalists for Director of the Roane County school district in Tennessee.
