Andrea Mitchell of NBC News reports that General David Petraeus today resigned
as director of the CIA after admitting an extra-marital affair.
The former general had been one of the most respected
figures in the military and intelligence establishment, but has stepped down to
deal with the 'personal and professional issues' surrounding his relationship
with a woman who is not his wife.
He had been sworn in as head of the CIA in September 2011.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the
President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as
D/CIA. After being married for over 37
years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital
affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both
as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously
accepted my resignation.
Multiple sources tell NBC News that Mike Morrell, the deputy
CIA director and a longtime CIA officer, would likely be offered the job as
acting director but with the understanding that he may be elevated to the job
permanently at some point.
That's how George Tenet got the job, first as deputy
director in July 1995, then acting director following the resignation of John
Deutch in December 1996 and finally as director in July 1997, staying on in the
Bush Administration.
Morrell is a longtime CIA analyst and was an eyewitness to
two of the most momentous events in recent U.S. history. He was traveling with
President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001, as the president's briefer, and was
in the Situation Room on May 1, 2011, as deputy CIA Director, when Navy SEALs
killed Osama bin Laden.
Here is Petraeus' resignation letter:
HEADQUARTERS Central Intelligence Agency
9 November 2012

| General David Petraeus |
As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the
greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation's
Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host
of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to
you for that.
Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life's greatest gift is
the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have
done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that
work with you to an end.
Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and
best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for
our country and our Agency.
With admiration and appreciation,

hope he is free speak the truth of Benghazi, now that he is resigned, at the closed hearings next week. I want to know more about the gun running and who the guns were given to and why it prevented the us from responding to a terrorist attack on our embassy when it will all come out in the end. Obama's middle east fast and furious
ReplyDeleteI think he'll remain one of the most respected figures in the military and intelligence establishments.
ReplyDeletereally? remember what the left thought of him when he worked for W?
Deletegeneral Petraeus or general Betray us ?
same work ethic different president.
I actually agree with rich logan but come on here. petraeus is clearly not taking one for Obama here starting with his comment - no one at the CIA ordered anyone to stand down on oct 26 and now he conveniently resigns under personal reasons. Does this sound like "its all over a video" story that we've heard before?
I smell a cover up. Nixon was impeached over a cover up. forget the poll there should be an Obama impeachment NOW!!!
Nixon wasn't impeached. He resigned. Do you really think that trying to impeach the President is the best use of Congress's time given the fiscal mess that's facing us? The right needs to accept the results of the election and focus and doing the country's business rather than trying to score points with the base in anticipation of 2014.
DeleteWe are facing a fiscal cliff and things are very bad and about to get worse. Also, There is never a good time to impeach a president but if the facts are there they are there. This has Nothing to do with party lines because, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke
DeleteWhy did Nixon resign ? because he was about to be impeached for a cover up. Obama is guilty of the same. During Biden's VP debate he basically said the complete outline of a failed gun running policy. go listen to it again.
How many times do you ditto heads have to be reminded that the program started under Bush?
DeleteYou guys have been trying to find a cover up ever since Obama was elected. Now it's Benghazi, despite the fact that so far there is no evidence to support that either.
How long are you going to listen to propaganda sources that, while they confirm what you want to believe, have repeatedly been proven wrong?
You probably would have sought a revolution against Ferdinand and Isabella because everybody knew that Columbus would either be eaten by sea monsters or fall off the edge of the earth.
The Russians were infamous for their "honeypots".
ReplyDeleteThe Daily Show Broadwell Interview:
“He realizes he's seen as an extremely ambitious individual. You want somebody who's ambitious and driven, and who has a will to win. He goes all-in to what he does.”
@ (6) minutes, she brings up her husband when discussing Petraeus' lack of “long-term planning”.
"My husband wants me to say he is, because it'll sell more books," she says. "I'm sorry, "honey"! I couldn't do it!"

ReplyDeleteso this is a propaganda source ? keep on with "move on" strategy but Obama was/is running guns into Syria because Benghazi wasn't over a video.
I'd say propaganda. This is the same guy who compared Obama to Hitler in the same publication in 2010.

In fact, Sowell has been on a mission to vilify Obama for a long time.
DeleteJust type 'Thomas Sowell Obama' into Google. The anti-Obama tirades go on for pages.
people have said that your site is full of propaganda but that doesn't mean everything you say is wrong. Writing off peoples' differing thoughts, opinions, and the facts they present is elitist at best. If people did that to your propaganda site than no one would visit here.
ReplyDeleteOpen your mind to the possibilities that you don't know everything and that someone else could be right about this. They didn't die over a VIDEO!
You may consider my writing propaganda, but I back up my assertions with facts and data. Take for example your statement that “They didn’t die over a VIDEO!”
DeleteAccording to The New York Times, October 17:
“What do eyewitnesses say about the events in Benghazi? Were they related to the insulting video, or is that a red herring? And was the assault planned for the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, or was it spontaneous?
According to reporting by David D. Kirkpatrick and Suliman Ali Zway of The New York Times, eyewitnesses have said there was no peaceful demonstration against the video outside the compound before the attack, though a crowd of Benghazi residents soon gathered, and some later looted the compound. But the attackers, recognized as members of a local militant group called Ansar al-Shariah, did tell bystanders that they were attacking the compound because they were angry about the video.”

I hasten to add that I do not accept that as the final word.
DeleteIt merely illustrates that there are a variety of reports out there that warrant an investigation. But the haste with which people have latched onto conspiracy theories and unfounded accusations is demonstrative of how the right has treated all aspects of this Administration.
Additionally, I am not particularly troubled by being called elitist. In this context it appears to be the antonym of anonymous.
DeletePigheaded, close-minded elitist. You are soooooo much smarter than everybody else. Jerk.
ReplyDeleteAnd thus concludes another erudite and pedagogically fulfilling exchange.
DeleteCoiming from the king of assholes, thank you, jerk off!
DeleteALCOA called. Your hat is ready.
