Through The Looking Glass

Ken O'Brien

With all that is going on in Anne Beinema's situation, I had to ask myself several questions.

First and foremost is, "Why is this case being carried by our local attorney Rob Caprera?"

Don't get me wrong. I know Rob, I like him, and I respect him.

But, with all legitimately due respect, he is not a specialist in municipal law.

Up until a couple of years ago Southbridge was represented by Kopelmann & Paige.

The council subsequently decided to drop that firm (except regarding a few ongoing matters) and hire two attorneys. One would be local and, as a backup when needed, a law firm specializing in municipal law in Massachusetts.

As the local attorney, intended to handle matters of a more everyday and non-specialized nature, Mr. Caprera was chosen.

As the specialist in municipal law the town adopted the firm of Blatman, Bobrowski & Meade, LLC.

I had dealings with this firm when I (in my obviously biased opinion) was browbeaten into dropping any further actions regarding my supposed "resignation" from the town council. At that time, and currently, I was surviving on the meager stipend provided by workers compensation as a result of an on-the-job accident.

Without the financial means to defend myself or pursue my case, I had to surrender my rights in the face of threats to sue me for all legal and court costs if I did not close the case with judicial prejudice.

The correspondence was addressed to me by Adam J. Costa of Blatman, Bobrowski and Meade, LLC on behalf of the town. This was in the fall of 2010.

The reason I tell this story is because I wondered why six town councilors were willing to entrust their personal fortunes to the representations of a non-specialist in municipal law rather than having a firm supposedly devoted to that practice representing them?

I then proceeded to engage in a google search regarding Blatman, Bobrowski & Meade, LLC.

This is where it eventually led me:

So, my second question is why is a firm that was acting on behalf of the town a year ago still without a web-site even a year later?

Question number three is, why are six councilors willing to risk everything on the advice of a non-specialist when the town manager has no skin in the game?

The final question is, who exactly is Blatman, Bobrowski & Meade, LLC ?

As Alice said, "...curiouser and curiouser!"
