Breaking News: Ely Placed On Leave

The Worcester Telegram is reporting that an emergency meeting of the Southbridge School Committee has voted to place Southbridge School Superintendent Eric Ely on administrative leave. The action results from an undivulged complaint received by the committee.

School Business Manager Terry Wiggin will assume the duties of temporary acting Superintendent.

The story is available HERE.

Additional background on Mr. Ely is available from an article in today's Daily Gazette from Albany, NY.

  1. I know I said I was goin' fishin'. I feel like Al Pacino in Godfather III, "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in."

  2. You denied that there was smoke in the room when some of us "the anonymous" warned you of this. But instead of taking any action, you belittled, scolded, and called us names. Now it seems as though the house is in flames. The question is will you call the fire department or just let it burn....

    1. It is one thing to make allegations which have not appeared in a public forum and cannot be attributed to a source. Barring that I was never given any proof of any allegations.

  3. I guess we can't blme the "fab four" for this one since one is gone, I guess the former school committee perhaps had it right when they were holding the Superintendent accountable. Where oh where will the ones that stated when JJ is gone Ely can do his job with the new school commitee...yep, no oversight and in four months he has lead the school district down a path that I hope we can recover.

    1. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of any lack of accountability by the current committee leadership. My inquiries indicate that the emergency meeting was held at the behest of members of the current majority.

    2. There were just as many fights at the old HS if not more. The difference is that no one talked about them because they were afraid to talk about them. The comment about ambulances getting called to the old HS rings true as well. IT is/WAS the administration. It was the building now it's not. It's the same unruly student body now given a luxury box to fight in.

  4. There's plenty of blame to go around.
The people in New York tried to warn us but nobody listened.
The whole school committee past and present should be recalled.
Turn it over to the state.
In fact turn the whole town over to the state. We are being choked to death by incompetents.

  5. As a parent who has been involved with the district for a long time, I am begging the DOE to PLEASE take us over! PLEASE. I am sick and tired of all this bull sh*t that keeps burrying us. I wanted to give the new principal and Ely a chance, I really did. But it just isn't working - no teachers or students are happy with what is going on. Nothing good is going to come out of this.

    1. There is a petition to Mitchell Chester, Commissioner of the DESE up on Change.org requesting he place a receiver in the district here is the link http://www.change.org/petitions/save-the-southbridge-students-and-their-education

  6. It appears that a take over by the state is long over due. I would hope that the members of the School Committee that are not under another councilor's influence would vote to contact the DESE and ask for an immediate take over by appointing an interim superintendent.
Where are all the parents in all of this? There was no one at the last school committee meeting. WAKE UP SOUTHBRIDGE! You only get one chance at a decent education for your children!

  7. Public sector misdeeds = Paid Administrative Leave.
    Private sector misdeeds = Fired.

One can be so much kinder with taxpayer money than would otherwise be the case.
