The Outsider's View And Why Southbridge Is Not My Home

Javier Melendez

Javier Melendez
I do not usually voice my frustrations. However I feel it is important to inform Southbridge of why I chose not to make it my home. There are many things I love about Southbridge and it makes me sad to see where Southbridge is now. From the fights to the finger pointing and the adult babies. Southbridge way back when was a great community where people took pride and were proud to say that they came from Southbridge. Now many people my age can’t wait to get out of Southbridge. Being almost 21, I have worked 5 jobs, 2 of which were in Southbridge. When I was 17 I worked during the summer alongside the DPW under the stimulus package which provided a summer job for younger people  and we helped beautify Southbridge, and it was a job which you could take pride in at the end of the day.

Now if I drive through, we have holiday decorations up 2 weeks BEFORE THANKSGIVING. That seems a bit ridiculous. I read about how the school Superintendent is placed on leave, (always a great situation). We have a great new school but there are still issues with the administration, the prices and taxes are rising so fast, I would not be surprised if in a few years the amount of taxes and water and sewer are more than 90% of what people pay for mortgage. And to top it all off even the police department is having issues. I mean if the people you call in an emergency have issues what does that mean for the rest of us. Call me dumb, naive or ignorant if you want but you can’t deny what I am saying.

Even when I was graduating High School the Southbridge kids were happy to go to college, not for the education, but to get out of Southbridge. Personally I had to leave Southbridge. My profession offered me no opportunity and the town would definitely not offer me any chance at being successful. The only chance it seems I would have had to have a business in this town is by starting a restaurant or bar. Sad but true.

Now as I once heard a local Chairperson say “All I hear is griping but no one is offering solutions" Well here’s a few. First, why not actually call some of the franchise businesses that people oh so want and tell them and show them some of the primo business locations that are available (including the old Friendly's). Why not offer programs like “If you set up a business in Southbridge, you can get half of the fees you paid the town back after 1 year." Or something like that. Why not partner with Quinsigamond to offer deals to local businesses when the college kids shop there. Hell they’re college kids, give them a buy one get one slice of Pizza, (It goes a long way trust me).

The last thing I want to say is "stop acting like babies".  The finger pointing, the personal agendas, the he said she said. Most of the people who can make a difference act like kids and the rest just keep voting the kids back in or don’t care. GROW UP, GET A PAIR, AND WORK TOGETHER!

  3. When you talk about finger pointing remember: When you point a finger at someone you have three fingers pointing at you....

  6. What is so rediculous about having decorations up two weeks before Thanksgiving? What makes you so qualified on what is rediculous or not? Perhaps instead of your exhausting rant (which by the way is all about YOU, and probably a set up for your unfortunate return to the limelight.) you should pick and choose your grevances more carefully. You are probably a descent kid, and have your heart in the rite place, but next time skip the drama and boo baby act. Reasonable people want our leaders to inspire confidence and calmness- Both of which you sorely lack. "Actions speak louder than words" When is the last time you did something for the town without the benefit of personal reward or attention for your deed?

  7. Ha Ha first things first. I love how these are all anonymous. Second you are correct I did not get voted in, but managed to pull over 400 votes in a 1,200 voter election- not to bad for being only 18 at the time. Third, I did drink the cool aid... It was tasty. Fourth, I have no problem with decorations, but two weeks before a completely different holiday is a little absurd in my mind. I love how people think this was me just tooting my own horn or playing up drama when I simply spoke my mind. Apparently that is not allowed in Southbridge. I have done things for the town (including volunteering for years at the local cable station and working with the DPW) but to be honest, I never did any of that for self gratification, only to try to help the town. Thanks for reading
