Southbridge Police Union Votes “No Confidence” In Chief

The O’Zone has received confirmation from multiple sources that the Southbridge Police Association recently took a vote of “no confidence” in Southbridge Chief of Police Daniel Charette.

Indications are that the final text of the union’s statement is being reviewed prior to a formal public release.

The action will undoubtedly pose a difficult situation for town manager Christopher Clark who is the Chief’s immediate superior. Regardless of the specific grounds for the resolution, the fact is that any police department is in essence a paramilitary organization. The loss of confidence in a superior officer poses serious issues of morale as well as discipline.

More details will be forthcoming as they become available.

UPDATES: 9:15 am – 5/30: An additional preliminary report indicates what was actually termed a vote of “no faith” in the chief carried by a vote of 15 to 0.

Well if the police union had a vote of no confidence on Charette they must have a good reason! Could it be that hes never in the station,Always riding around with Clark during the day or with his best friend former chief Ciesla? Is he a chief or a politician? Or how about the fact that hes the only chief to ever live out of town! (STURBRIDGE) If he doesnt want his family to be part of Southbridge then Dan get the hell out we dont want you either! Not to mention he makes almost as much as clark.I also vote NO CONFIDENCE!!!!!

  4. This is a chief that has also allowed the Police Department to be utilized as an intimidation tool for the Manager and his Councilor backers. The crime gets worse, drugs are literally spilling onto the streets of town, and the town is in complete decline.....yet, the chief, town manager, and town leadership are sending police officers to silence citizens at town meetings, or standing guard while the town manager illegally "fires" employees. In return the Chief is rewarded hansomely (almost 4 times what the average Joe Southbridge earns) to continue his lifestyle on his boat and nice home out of town. It's time the police force take control and stand up to this. I believe most on the force joined to do good, but have entered a system that is mismanaged and allowed to worsen under this current leadership.

  5. Don't forget that Charette is also the one who recommended probation to the 12 Crane manager who was dealing drugs to children in a school zone--among those drugs was the same "bath salt" plant fertilizer that was cited in the naked man zombie-like attack in Florida:

Since Charette has taken over, crack houses have sprung up all over the town of Southbridge including several within a half mile of the police station and Main St.

  6. The problem with the vote of 15 to 0 is not going to achieve what those 15 members want a new chief. They needed to be 100% unified to make the changes that they feel needs to be made. Some years ago the Fire department did the same and it failed and only gave the chief more power. This time chief 1 union 0

    2. WTF? 15-0 not unified enough for you? Believe me you talk to the force off record and Charette is as dead weight as it gets. The guys out of touch plain and simple and its all about the personality plain and simple. Hes just like manager Clark. Cash the paycheck and go home to Sturbridge. This towns got problems and boating on the Vinyard aint gone to fix it. Get a real cop who knows cops and lets them do there job and stop micromanaging every last thing. Sorry to say but you got to earn respect not get paid for it.

you should be proud if you are fat and wear blue after all the doughnuts you guys eat you should be fat. If you think that having less than 1/2 of the department vote to not have any faith in the chief is something to be proud of you better wake up and smell the coffee and get some more doughnuts. Without the other 1/2 the department will go no where. The supporters of the chief will dig in for the long battle. The non supporters will watch and report the bad action that happen. Just watch and see. If the union leaders would have spoken to their lawyers or their international leaders they would done it in a different way and would have been told if you are not 100% strong look at other ways. The thin blue line that you have between your group will get thinner it will break, no more covering your back. watch out, the back stabbing will began, rules will be enforced, discipline will began, enjoy the coffee and doughnuts now because the PD will be going on a diet.

    1. Do you actually believe that those who didn't vote were for Charette? Or is it more likely that they were just afraid of reprisals even though they agree with those who did vote? Any crackdown will only stiffen the opposition.

  8. From what I was explained by an officer at the SPD the vote taken was to speak to the union attorneys about a no confidence vote. No official action has been taken as of yet. Apparently Charrette retaliated against a sergeant and unjustly removed the officer from there post. The membership became enraged because of that and other issues I guess that the membership is looking into the possibility of having the vote. Either way it is clear that chief has lost the support of at least half of its officers which isn't good for our town. Morale is at an all time low according to this officer and that's not good for anyone. Time for the Manager to step in it looks like and act and stop letting the chief run the town. Hopefully the men in blue act and let the public know the truth.

  9. Isn't this funny here we are making comment and the Police Union hasn't even voted on this all, they did was vote to go talk to the lawyer. Boy talk about jumping to conclusions. Boy I guess the chief is going to get the upper hand now. O boy look out.

    1. At this point I stand by what I have reported. What I consider reliable sources (numbering five) have told me that the vote was taken and the matter is in lawyer’s hands in order to craft an appropriate public statement. If a responsible representative (not an anonymous poster) contacts me with contrary information, I will correct what I have reported.

ooow they should a be afraid of the big bad chief now lol. Look this isnt Nazi Germany even though it might seem that way but the police in this town have a right to do what needs to be done to straighten the so called leadership when he is an absentee chief. I commend those officers for standing there ground and I for one am proud of them! I dont know if any vote was taken yet or what its about but sounds like theres something cooking and it sounds like it could be the Chief

  10. I’ve been told that Charete is caving in. He has offered to back track on his actions that led to the union’s vote. This is an effort to short circuit public announcement of the union action.

    1. Tonight the Chief gave a shout out to Sgt. Carlos Dingui for his hard work in vetting the police candidates. Further proof that he is trying to smooth over the department revolt and avoid further public embarrassment.
